question about lunches on the go

I am a special education teacher so we have little to no time for lunch.   i have been on eggfaces blog and saw how she uses a Bento box for lunches and things.  Has anyone else used this?   i have a refrigerator in my classroom along with a microwave so it won't be a problem.   Just want to be sure it's worth the money --- I need something with the small sizes as we all know - you don't eat like you used to eat.   Thanks

Ive considered over the last year or so but i prefer to just use my 1/2 cup tupperware dishes - I pre-package everything in advance so in the mornings, I just grb my lunch box, throw a couple containers in there and go.

THNAKS  --- my husband said if i buy anymore containers it will not be nice -- lol --- now all of the containers are WAY too big so gonna have to get some new ones !
I think i usually pay about $3 for my 1/2 cup Glad tupperware dishes - a 6 pack. I have 3 sets right now (18 containers lol) but its relatively cheap. I also use a lot of ziplock bags to pack snacks and stuff too.

Your husb is gonna have to deal :)

thanks, I was wondering about that too. I'll stick with my containers and baggies.
I think the bento box is a great idea, however bento boxes are upwards of $20. I haven't had surgery yet but I found a great alternative! Walmart/Target both sell a toddler compartment lunch box, just like a bento box! It's only $6.99, I bought one for after surgery. I only have some smaller sized containers as well like Alison mentioned, I know those will come in handy. Here is a link, they come in pink and blue, I got blue.

I havent actually used it yet, but it looks like it wont be a problem to clean. It also has 3 sections, one which has an air tight compartment. I think it is a great way to put a variety of things in one place because I like to have different options when I am hungry.

Bringing lunches is great, and the Bento boxes are cool. Just be sure the small containers are air/fluid tight. Another thing to consider is having stuff around in case you forget lunch. I have my own little bariatric pantry (it's actually a drawer at work) to have things on hand.

I keep a couple of ready made shakes that I can stick in the fridge in the morning and have cold by lunch, some cans of tuna salad (I buy the packs with tuna and crackers, then toss the crackers) and some Quest bars (warning, some folks find those triggery - I don't).

I often will make my own version of eggface's "bites" which are just egg-based crustless mini-quiches. I make them with eggs, fat free ricotta cheese, shredded stronger tasting cheeses and an assortment of diced/sauteed veggies. I don't eat meat, but if you do, adding chicken/beef/ham or something in here would be good too. And they are perfect sized for us-- about an ouce each if you bake them in mini-muffin pans.

Good luck!

Could you provide the recipe and directions for your version of the "bites"?  It's sounds tasty!  Thanks! -Larry

I'm a special ed teacher too, so I know how short lunches are.  If we're lucky we get 20 minutes...usually not that lucky.  I have a refrigerator and microwave at school too.  I always keep 'go to' things in my closet and frig like tuna kits, protein drinks, protein bars, greek yogurt, healthy snacks,  etc.  I try to cook extras for supper to take.  I looked into those containers.  I'm a real sucker for 'gadgets' that really aren't necessary...or at least not for me.  I already have a ton of containers.  The ones I use the most are the cheapest that wal-mart has that are supposed to be disposable.  That's been my experience anyway.  This is my last week before school starts, so I better get stocked up!  Have a great school year!
Thanks everyone for the awesome posts and ideas!   I will be working with the small ones i have and I think I might have to go and steal my moms since her little containers just sit there and collect dust -- You guys ROCK

I have one of the bento laptop lunch w/ carry bag. But I prefer the divided toddler one I got for my daughter. She is in elem school now and doesn't take lunch often so I use hers from preschool. If you want the bento and willing to pay shipping. I'd send it to you. PM me and I will send you pictures of it. (only used 1x)

I am also a sucker for gadgets and really researched the container dilema. I found that an array of snap tight containers and a great lunch box work great. I have found lunch boxes with fitted ice paks and containers with ice paks too. The nice thing about this set up is it is interchangeable depending on need. Work lunch, car trip, weekend away, whatever. The snap tight containers are great because you can prepack and freeze for another day...no thought or planning....just grab and put it in the bag. I pack my food wherever we are going and I want it to be easy and fun, this works.
