How long did the pain from a hernia repair last for you?

My surgeon found a hiatal hernia (2 mm hole in my diaphram as he explained it) that was unexpected. That area is mostly sore and tight unless I sneeze, cough or laugh the OMG PAIN!! I am finding that the weight of my lower abdomin is pulling on that sensitive area up higher when I stand up. Uncomfortable. I'm just wondering how long that pain lasted for others.

Gets better everyday. It hurt to inhale.  I used a spirometer they gave me.  It got better after 7 days.  Good luck .

I was using the spirometer a lot until today. I kept forgetting today. I've done my own deep breathing and exhaling when things feel really tight. Thanks for your input!

The gravity pain was the hardest for me. I didn't have a hernia repair, so I don't know how that factors into the pain. I slept in my lazyboy chair for about two weeks. After that I'd start in the bed and move to the lazyboy if I needed to. Most of it was pain from laying flat.

Outside of that I didn't have a huge amount of pain. When I started karate at 2 months post-op I had a lot of pain. Our doc's nurse said that it comes from breaking up all the scar tissue in your abdomen. It only lasted about a week.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks! Overall I'm doing fine. My stomach is doing great. It is the gravity pain standing up that is killing me right now. I tried laying down in bed once today and that was a resounding NO. I felt like my head was downhill and there was not a comfortable position. So I'm still in a recliner taking pain meds for now. It is markedly better today for the rest of my body, and I can stand up from a sitting position with less pain today. I'm glad I took off a whole month of work!
