What I REALLY needed at the hospital
As others have stated, there isn't much you need at the hospital, but there are some things that I really couldn't have done without.
1. Biotene dry mouth spray - I couldn't have any liquids until my leak test the next morning. I sprayed this in my mouth and then used the swab and it was a life saver!
2. Chapstick -- after surgery, my lips were unbelievably chapped
3. Hair elastic/scrunchy -- it was nice to have my hair off my face and neck.
4. Personal hygiene products -- toothbrush/paste, face wash, deodorant. It felt nice to wash myself up the following morning. I felt like a new person. The hospital provided me with a toothbrush/paste and soap, but I'm glad I brought my own.
5. Comfortable slippers for walking. I had flip flops with me and never used them because I had the hospital socks on. Big mistake. It wasn't good for my feet to be walking in stocking feet.
6. Cell phone -- it felt nice to be in touch with everyone once I was awake and alert. It was great to be able to speak with my son before surgery and afterward. He needed to hear my voice (he is only 7) to know that I was okay.
I didn't need a nightgown or robe. I walked around in the hospital gowns and was very comfortable in them. I did bring underwear because I was due for my TOM, which arrived the morning after surgery. I went home in the same clothes I went to the hospital in the day before.
To those of you getting yourselves ready for an upcoming surgery, good luck and be excited that your new life is ready to begin!
