Denied, for now...

So, I got the call from my surgeon's office today. I was denied for the sleeve because I did nothing with my lap band for 2012. I didn't go once to the surgeon for fills or anything else. The truth of the matter was that I was embarrassed and wanted to loose weight before I went.

Anyway the doctor spoke with the insurance people and they have required me to meet the the nutritionist two more times and get a complete psychological evaluation. I have already done the evaluation.

Am I bummed? A little. I don't think my head is quite in the game yet and almost feel relived that I don't have to make a decision yet. I know I should be sure already that I want the sleeve but I am not quite there yet.

I started low carb yesterday and actually stuck to it. It would be great if I lost some weight while I was waiting for approval.

 

 

Sorry to hear this. Will you appeal? What does your insurance require? I had a hard fought insurance battle. I'd be happy to listen if you need an ear...

Well, it sounds pretty positive to me. It sounds like they gave you a pathway to a revision. Believe me, I had to jump through 6 months of hoops in order to get my sleeve (after my band was removed), but it was so WORTH the aggravation and time off from work. I had to see a nutritionist, psychologist, behavior specialist, exercise specialist, cardiologist, and an entire slew of other folks. I would spend this time meeting with the nutritionist and sort of re-evaluate where you are right now. 

I did some serious soul searching and, while I hating waiting 6 months, I think it was for the best. I was totally prepared for the next leg of my journey and ready to rock my sleeve.

I am a pre op VSG and I know you had your heart set in the sleeve but at least you have a tool to work with for now. Did they suggest you get a fill while you wait for your approval?

Yes, I had fills and unfills every month for nine months before the band was removed.  I started the 6 months diet during this time so it was out of the way along with the psychological evaluation and started 6 visits with they therapist with WLS.  All while working on appealing the decisions.
