Appetite/sleeve space dropped

I am now about 6.5 weeks out. Up until about 5 days ago, I could eat 2-2.5 oz of meat without any problem. I was frequently hungry as well and was at about 800 cal with 80g protein. Over the last 5 days, I am not that hungry and have trouble even getting 1-1.5 oz in. Last night I ate 1.5 oz and had some pretty violent foamies.

Is this normal? It seems odd that I'm going backwards in capacity. I'm not complaining about not being hungry as frequently though!

Some people eat to much in the first 4/8 weeks as they don't feel the full as the nerves have been cut.  That is why we are told to measure and could only have 1-2 oz up to 4 week and no more than 2 oz-1/4 cup at 8 weeks. With meat it is also important to go by volume and not weight.

You are now feeling full with less because you are actually "feeling" full.  This indicates that you were eating more than the sleeve should have held.

The hunger in the first 8 weeks can be acid or head hunger.  Or in my case over a year out and still head hunger.

I definitely got different guidelines than you did.  I was allowed 2-4 ounces during pureed stage (weeks 2 and 3) and then 4-8 ounces once I hit the 4 week mark.  And I was told to go by weight for everything once I left the pureed stage.

Just another example of how different surgeons have different plans!  (Although I'm at week 6 this week and I'm happy eating between 1-4 ounces depending on the food.)

Yes and that was why I was so worried about you in your earlier post when you reported throwing up.  You should never eat enough to throw up and strain your healing staple line.

I hardly ate "enough to throw up" - I had a single small bite of fish and it was too dry.

This is the way I know it also and your measurements sound spot on.

Our sleeves were sized by a measuring tool that sizes for "Volume/capacity". Our sleeves don't detect weight.

The only caveat is that measuring meats by weight is more accurate and repeatable because it's hard to measure meats in a measuring cup every time. What one needs to do is understand the relative difference between weight and volume of dense meats.

The other thing is that nutrition on meats is figured on weight.

Sounds like the OP was eating to much at first, but it's all coming together for her now and the new normals are being established.

I agree!  The point I was trying to make is our stomachs hold by volume and the difference between weight and volume of dense meat.  When I could have 1/4 cup, I weighed out 2 oz of meat, chopped it fine and tried to stuff it into a 1/4 cup, it doesn't fit.  Only ~ 1.5 oz by weight fit.  Based on this and reinforced by my center,I would only eat 1.5 oz of solid protein by weight.

Hey surgisister! I haven't experienced that one yet, even though I just wasn't hungry today... Had to force myself to eat. Not complaining! Good luck, and hopefully it's just a fluke.

Hey there, I am about 14 weeks out from surgery and funny this topic came up. For the past 3-4 weeks I have been able to down about 3/4-1 whole serving of greek yogurt with no problem. I am about 1/3 of the way through my normal breakfast and I am so full I can't even take another bite. I think our tummies go through ups and downs. The most important thing is not to eat until you are full. Stop eating when you are satisfied. I think it will totally help once we are completely healed and leads to better eating habits down the road.

I wish we were never hungry again :) I have a pretty good ride thus far. No complications, no real problems with stomach acid. I have an issue with picking something up b/c I am in the kitchen and its in front of me or I think I should eat. This is probably what assisted me on the way up to my highest weight. I probably should go see a food therapist but I have been really good at resisting temptation. I stop think about if I am really hungry or not. If Im not sure I have a drink - water, Crystal light, coffee. Not that I am deferring hunger but I feel if I were still hungry after the water, then its time to eat.

THe most important thing is that you are knowing your signs when to stop and staying hydrated (besides getting protein in and trying to eat).
