How much do your taste buds change after surgery?

Hi all,

Had my final consult with the surgeon and the dietician today.  Overall went well but one of the things the Dietician and I talked about is tastes changing with the sleeve.  Curious - anyone care to share how much their tastes changed?  Did you have aversions to food that you previously liked?  Or did you suddenly love something that you werent fond of prior?  Just preparing for what to potentially expect (I know everyone is different).

Thanks!

My tastes did change..I used to be a pasta and sauce JUNKIE..

after surgery, it holds no allure for me anymore As a matter of fact

the tomato sauce tastes "tinney" to me..and I've used the same tomatoes as always..

not complaining, it's actually a blessing to me cause I loved my pasta, and I wondered pre surgery if I would be able to control myself when it came to that..also chocolate really does nothing for me anymore also..

and I've noticed that I now enjoy things with more of a savory/ spicy flavor to it when I the past I didn't care for spicy foods and was all about anything sweet..

No real taste changes per se, but things I liked at one time really hold no appeal -  pasta in particular.

The other thing for me is that I react much more strongly to sugar than I think I did pre sleeve, but I wonder if I just wasn't aware of how much I loved and craved sugary foods.

I could not tolerate sweet things after surgery.  I couldn't even take my multivitamin because the sweetness turned my stomach.  I found if I crushed my vitamins and mixed them into plain unsweetened yogurt, I could eat them.  the same problem with sweet protein drinks.  I had to switch to chicken soup with protein powder.  I drank a lot of chicken soup for the first 6 months!

Other foods did taste different, but no other aversions or cravings.

good luck,

Carol

I am going to expand my answer and say that while my tastes haven't changed, my appetite has. Today I saw a commercial for Olive Garden with all the pastas and cheesy things and I had 0 reaction until it was over and I thought wow, I am not sitting here going into a "gotta have that" mode like I would pre surgery. If that makes sense lol

That totally makes sense.  I was wanting a snack this afternoon at work and while I was thinking about my options, I realized I wasn't tempted at all by the vending machine offerings in the break room.  I actually thought instinctively that I didn't want to waste the little room I have for food on something that wasn't going to do anything good for me.  I was kind of proud of myself when I realized that was a thought that just happened instead of needing to talk myself into it like I used to when I was trying to lose weight.

Yay for changes!  :)
