Bod Pod Body Composition

I had a Bod Pod test done yesterday.  I am at 50% EWL so I thought it was a good idea to see where I am at and get a feel for where my goals should be.  My surgeon says goal = 60% EWL = 240 pounds for me.  Uh - no...I'm almost there at 5m out, I can go further.  I am a numbers person, so I wanted to have a better idea of what is reasonable for a goal.

My BMI range is 123-163 for my height but Currently my lean mass (bone, muscle, organs) = 156 pounds

Plus my fat mass of 97 pounds (38.5% of my body mass is fat)  I must have started at over 50% body fat...I am very happy to be under 40% now!

For me to be BMI normal, I'd have to lose lean mass or become an elite athlete with 7 pounds of fat on me.  So, I have concluded that BMI is not realistic for my frame.  I have a large frame, 9" wrists, size 12 feet, man hands...

My goal of 185 might even be a stretch, but I am aiming for 140 lean + 45 fat = 185 (24% body fat)

I will go back for another Bod Pod assessment when I get to 200 pounds or so to see what I'm made of at that time!  It is only $40 and at a local university's campus fitness center so it is easy to get to and affordable enough to do 2-3 times on this journey.

I'm a big believer in body-fat analysis to determine healthy weight (see prior blogs of mine).  I think you have set a very reasonable goal for yourself.  It's a nice fantasy to believe that we can lose large amounts of weight without losing muscle mass but that's all it is...a fantasy.  Even with hard-core exercise we are fated to lose some muscle mass.

Congrats on all the progress you've made so far and keep up the great work!

I totally need to do this.  My scale at home says that I am 33% body fat and I'm just not sure how that is possible.  I should just pony up and get this done.

What cool information to have!  I look forward to doing this once I'm closer to goal and once my home scale tells me my body fat is much lower than it is now!  I want to drag my partners with me so we can make it a family event ;)

I had mine done two weeks ago at the office. They didn't use the "water" test (which apparently has an error margin of 3%) but instead they used an InBody machine (looks like a scale) that measures Body Composition through mild electrical current. It has an error margin of 5% and was free for me to do; I'll take that!

On the day we did this, I weighed 205 lbs. Apparently for my height, my normal BMI range is 111-150 lbs. My lean body mass is already 131 lbs.

My current body fat was measured at 75 lbs, or 36% (I think I calculated that correctly?). The machine indicated that I only need to lose 35 lbs -- without needing to increase my muscle mass -- to get myself down to a good, manageable weight of 170 lbs. Personally, I was aiming for 150, the top of my BMI range.

I guess I will hang in there and keep on trucking, and when I hit the 170 mark, or thereabouts, maybe I'll ask for a reassessment and see where I go from there. I have a six-month follow up next week and if I remember correctly, I have already gone further than they predicted at my centre so I'm really pleased with that.

Congrats on the assessment. Looks like you're definitely on the right track! It's so wonderful to see these numbers in black and white and to have a definite goal in mind that jives with a health professional!
