Has anyone here had the VSG and attempted to do a ketogenic diet afterwards?

My surgery is scheduled for 9/16 and I am trying to decide what my strategy will be.  I know most post VSG diets are high protein/low carbs/low fat, but has anyone attempted to do something higher in fat?  Will it get me sick?  I'll probably try different foods, just wondering your experience.  Thanks

I do lots of paleo recipes in my way of eating.  I've read a number of articles that link gall stones (and subsequent removal) to low fat diets, plus I've never believed that dietary fat is the culprit.  I don't use low-fat anything, and I don't do anything to avoid fat - I eat bacon, etc.

This is working well for me so far.  I've consistently lost at least 10 pounds a month and I'm really happy with that.  If I start having issues, I'll reevaluate.

I do regular fat everything and I have bacon too!  I have also consistently lost about 10/month.  I actually had to increase my fat intake after my first couple of months because all the lean protein I was eating wreaked havoc on my GI tract.  Once I added in more fat everything settled down.  Not a controlled study but it was at the advisement of my PCP.

Hello,

I too had my surgery done by Dr. Salameh!  I am happy to hear that you have consistently lost at least 10 pounds per month. I had my surgery on 12/10/15 and I have lost 65 pounds but this month I am having a major stall and have t lost but 1.8 lbs and I am so frustrated!  I exercise just about everyday and I am eating low carb, but the scale will not budge. I lose a pounds and then gain it right back.  Please tell me if you encountered any stalls and how you dealt with it?  Congratulations on all of your success!!

What, exactly, are you eating?  If you're not already, start tracking your food using something like MyFitnessPal.  Are you weighing/measuring what you eat?

I have always done low-ish carb, higher protein and have never worried about fats. I've never had a problem with it.

I know VSGers who have been pretty ketogenic, when I was here 08-10. It's definitely my plan overall to allow healthy fats no matter what anyone says, and limiting carbs.

I don't worry too much about lean protein.  I eat hamburger meat, chicken thighs, steak, bacon, sausage, etc.  No issues and I am averaging 20lbs per month.  I expect that to start tailing off some.

These responses make me feel so much better! My NUT said to eat low fat...low fat cheese, skim milk, etc and I was dreading the time when I start adding food back into my diet. Thank you!

I definitely plan to follow a keto diet. It's always worked well for me, plus I'm grossed out by low fat dairy. I'll see how I do once I transition to real food. I do tire of endlessly fighting with the nutritionists about it. All through the pre-op phase they gave me grief about my meat intake, fat intake, and especially saturated fat intake. One nutritionist was particularly rude with me about it. I really dread that! However my nutritionists consider margarine and "low fat spread" healthy fats which doesn't do much for their credibility.
