Home from the hospital

So I was discharged this evening and I'm finally at home in my own recliner sipping water. I'll be on full liquids starting tomorrow and that will continue until my 2 week appointment on October 23.

One thing I'm noticing is gurgling. It's kinda freaking me out lol. The doc gave me prescriptions for pain, nausea and a PPI. I also used the gasx strips. I'm having an issue every time I swallow a tiny bit of water...like a lump in my esophagus for a few seconds...when will that stop? Is it just because my tummy is swollen? Because at this rate I'm not gonna make my nurse's requirements of 64 oz of fluid and 100 grams of protein a day. Anyone got tips?

Don't worry about the gurgling - it's totally normal.  It's definitely challenging to get that much water consumed initially, which is why everyone says sip, sip, sip.  Everything is swollen so it might not be comfortable to swallow right now, but it will get easier with each day.  I think my instructions for the first few days were mainly to focus on water/liquids and not worry about the protein until you can drink more substantial liquids.  Water with a splash of apple juice was nice.

Congratulations, and best wishes for an easy recovery!  It just gets better from here on out.

The gurgling is yuckie ...I remember that!!! But it will pass... drinking is difficult for sure buy make it your job and do it... being readmitted sucks big time ..The last thing you want to do is become dehydrated. .. I was that dope... lol ... it will get easier every day that goes by!!! :-)

I'm making the water priority for now because yes, I don't want to go back to the hospital! While I was there I was going stircrazy!

I'm only 10 days out but the gurgling does get better....

Are you having spasms when you drink? If so I would call your surgeon's office and ask if they can prescribe something for that. I had to take something for a few days and it helped.

Try different things to get your liquids in...G2, Crystal Light, warm broth...tea... Flavor and temp might make a difference.

Good Luck! Hope you have a quick & easy recovery.

It's not spasms I don't think.... It's more like a big air bubble feeling like the one I feel when I used to have really bad hunger pangs. It comes and goes but comes more often right  taking a sip of water, protein shake etc. It feels like a huge air bubble trying to rise up.

I didn't stop gurgling until I passed gas. Now I'm feeling a lot better. I struggle with water as well. I'm on full liquid so I can have soup and broth. The brother is so much easier...I guess because its warm. I'm going to try to drink room temperature water to see if that helps me. Maybe it will help you as well.

Tried the room temp water and also lukewarm...the lukewarm went down much easier. Thanks for the tip! How are you feeling BTW?

A lot better actually. Keeping up with my pain meds is making is easy for me. I plan to go outside and walk on Saturday. I'm building myself up to it.

Awesome! I've been trying to get up and walk around the house every couple of hours...and then I ventured outside. Luckily we live at the end of a cul-de-sac so I walk around the circle a couple of times and I'll just keep building up to doing it more and more. It really helps with the bubbles.
