early eating post-op

is it bad that I'm eating food early? im one week and one day out from surgery and not supposed to start pureed foods until Friday oct 31.... every protein drink is now making me want to throw up. its the whey taste... I've tried a million diff. kinds. also, milk isn't settling well. Because I went an entire week with almost no protein, I gave in last night and ate the tiniest bite of deli ham. I chewed SUPER good, and swallowed...  then waited 15 mins, making sure it went down well. It did. So about an hour later I started eating a low fat mozzarella string cheese stick. I ate very very slowly, chewing very well. And I ended up eating a bit over half of it. And it made my stomach feel SO much better.

Does anyone see any actual harm that could be done by hopping on puree's early? I know my NUTR. office will say not to... but could it actually HURT me?

I know to avoid anything seedy... and I wont eat unhealthy things for no reason like carbs. I just want to get some protein... (chicken pureed with avocado, fish.... etc.)

Yes. It can actually hurt you. Stick to the plan you were given, your doc created it for a reason. If you're havingg trouble, ask the doc.

I couldn't stomach the sweet protein drinks after surgery, so I drank chicken broth with unflavored protein powder and that worked for me.  I mixed unflavored protein powder into anything I could stir, jello, pudding, yogurt, mashed cauliflower, cottage cheese.  I was able to make my protein numbers without any shakes.

I don't know how risky it is eating solids early, but I'd avoid it. Eat jello, pudding and yogurt, if they are on your plan. they were on mine early out.  Your tummy needs time to heal.

best of luck,

Carol

How did you make your chicken broth with the unflavored protein. I tried once and it currdled up on me and it was just super gross. Do you have any suggestions on the proper way to do it. Btw I used the isopure unflavored whey protein.

If the water is too hot, it will curdle.  I don't remember the number but you can find it on the internet.  I didn't use a thermometer, I just erred on the side of cool.

good luck,

Carol

Whey proteins will clump if cooked, so try mixing the protein powder with a bit of warm water, then incorporate that, once mixed, into your hot broth.  It is the reason that if you are wanting to make something (later) like Muffin in a Mug, that it is better to use a different type of protein powder....say pea or pumpkin for the muffin, imho.

I wouldn't eat any kinds of "soft foods" until your surgeon says it's okay. I would just try to push through it the best you can! Starting too early can cause lots of problems since your new stomach is trying to heal. Even pureed foods could hurt your stomach if it is too early to start.

You ate ham?  That's not just bad it's crazy.  Get back on the shakes whether you like them or not.  Drink slow and deal with it.  Follow your doctor's instructions.

All the statistics on post op mortality and other complications are almost 100% attributed to not following doctor instructions.
