What tests should be done to verify that a gallbladder has gone bad and needs to be removed?

I had my gallbladder removed five weeks before I was sleeved. I was really hoping to do it as a two in one shot, but my gallbladder had other plans and landed me in the ER. They usually just do an ultrasound to detect gallstones. I also had an MRI done on my gallbladder to see how bad it was, but that's only because I was being stubborn and didn't want to go through with surgery and my surgeon wanted to make sure there were no stones in the bile duct.

A hepatobiliary (HIDA) scan is an imaging procedure used to diagnose problems in the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. For this scan a radioactive chemical or tracer is injected into a vein in your arm. The tracer is handled by the liver like bile.

Usually an ultrasound identifies it.

Ultrasound, MRI, CT did not find anything in my wife, but a HIDA Scan showed her gallbladder was bad.

abdominal ultrasound.

there's blood tests too - but he only way to see the stones/sludge is by a scan.

mine was diagnosed in urgent care with an abdominal ultrasound.

Way back in 1979 - when I was in college, I had a gallbladder attack after returning fro Thanksgiving Break, having eaten lots of rich foods and desserts ( ironically, I was only 40 pounds heavier than I am now!) even though I was doing Optifast at the time.  I never had another gall bladder attack after that one.

The test for me was simple...PAIN!!! It didn't come out then, but when I had my DS in 2009, both my gallbladder and appendix were removed, to avoid further abdominal surgery for those reasons.  I had an open DS.  My surgeon didn't do lap on any patient over 50 BMI - my BMI was 67.
