My doctor requires a 10 day pre op diet and a post op diet. Did you lose weight before surgery?

I just had surgery on Thursday. Doc had me on a 2 week liquid diet that helped me lose 18 pounds pre-surgery. Be very diligent about sticking to it - the smaller your liver, the easier the procedure for your surgeon.

Pre-op, most of us get a liquid diet because it helps to reduce/firm up our liver for surgery.  Otherwise the liver can get in the way, get nicked, and cause lots of problems.

The post-op diet is to ensure that our stomachs are able to heal correctly.  It's equally important.

And, of course, for the rest of your life you'll need to maintain a new way of eating.

I lost about 25 pounds before surgery - I modified my diet in January and had surgery in March.  I was also on a liquid diet for 10 days before surgery.

That's the same thing I had pre-op!  Most on here have liquids only, but I was blessed with just no carbs...really missed my protein shakes and yogurt, though!  I got to have them as soon as I got home, so it was all worth it.  Best of luck these next few weeks...you won't regret it.

A true liver shrinking diet is ultra low carbs. If you're still consuming carbs in any form, even liquid, your liver won't be smaller. Many require liquids but not low carbs. They have their reasons. Just follow whatever your surgeon orders.

I did a required liquid diet for 10 days before surgery and I lost 11 lbs. It really hit me in the right mindset for surgery and post surgery. Also, I didnh mind losing 11 lbs!

I had a 14 day high protein, low carb pre-op diet (NOT liquid) and I lost 14 lbs. 12 lbs in the first week and 2 in the second.
