Eating at someones house/restaurant without spilling the beans about your WLS.

I was wondering, since I am very new to this (VS 12/3/14), how does one go about NOT telling everyone (eg. office party) that you had surgery (let alone this type of surgery), especially when you are expected to eat? Not everyone needs to know, especially those who we don't know well. Any ideas? I know some may get upset if I don't eat or only have our allowed amounts/types of food. Please help!

I am in the same boat.  I have been fielding questions and dodging watchful eyes.  It is uncomfortable at times for sure....hoping it will get easier :)

Congrats on your surgery!!

This is one of the reasons I'm completely open about surgery, it's just so much easier in situations like this!

I would work on having a script that you can follow.  Something like "Thanks, I'm fine [SUBJECT CHANGE."  For example, change the subject to the weather, or whatever your local sports team is, or whatever.  If you repeat this enough, people will get the hint.

Maybe just tell them, IF they ask, that you are trying to eat healthy and you figured there'd be amazing food here, so you ate something before you came. Now, you're just planning on nibbling a teensy bit, cause you want to just want to taste all their fabulous cooking. Then try to direct the subject onto how they made this or that, since most people like to talk more about their own accomplishments. Seems to work for me.

I was very open with friends & family, but out & about- all I feel the need to say if asked, is "I have a small appetite" period. I've never needed to explain myself past that or saying I have a small capacity or I'm a nibbler.. If you don't open it up to conversation, it won't become one!

FYI, once you are about 9mo-1yr out, this is a non-issue as you will eat a small portion, but not an insanely small portion as you will a few weeks-months out!

Thanks, this group focuses on food so much, it is difficult not to try everyone's dish (potluck don't you know). I think we need to refocus on other topics!

Merry Christmas!

I had surgery 10/24 and I have been thru thanksgiving, a rehearsal dinner, wedding, baby shower & family birthday party. I think that we worry more about what people will think or we think that people are watching everything what we put on our mouths. I haven't found this to be the case and I have been with people who both know and haven't known Ive had surgery. Today I was with clients at the Lions game and I ordered a turkey burger w/o the bun. I ate 1/2 of it and wasnt questioned. I know this won't always be the case but not everyone watched everything we put in our mouth. Try and enjoy your office party and don't worry about what others think!
