Crab Cake?

I will be going to a seafood restaurant on Xmas eve.  I had VSG surgery 6 weeks ago.  I haven't tried any seafood yet except for tuna fish.  I am afraid I won't be able to tolerate shrimp or scallops yet.  The only fish they have is battered cod and blackened tuna.  They do have vegetable crab soup, but it has corn and tomatoes which I can't have yet.  I was thinking of cream of crab or butternut squash soup or small broiled crab cake.  (I live in Maryland on the bay so the crab cake will be all lump, no fillers.)  I don't want to risk getting sick on Xmas eve.  Do you think the cream in the soup could make me sick?  What about the crab cake?  (I don't like oysters or clams). Other items that are offered are off limit too like seafood jambalaya.  Should I just not eat and wait until I am farther along?  Thanks!

I'm not sure why cream would make you sick?  I've had seafood bisque and it was delicious.  Ditto for crab cakes if they're good quality, which it sounds like these would be!  I'd opt for the crab cake over the soup.  Just make sure to eat really, really slowly.  :)

Thank you!  (I was worried about the fat content in the cream.)  The crab cake sounds like it would be ok, as it is about the same consistency as tuna, which I tolerated.

Fat is a healthy part of our diets, not something that needs to be avoided.  (Besides, the amount we get if we focus on protein is small!)

Hello,

How far along are you? I commend you for realizing that your sleeve may not quite be ready for shrimp or other items, even if sanctioned by your doctor. If in doubt, I would go for the squash soup. Not a lot of protein and it does have carbs, but for a holiday meal it the caloric load is acceptable. It is a favorite soup of mine too! If it were me though, I would go after some seafood that is not soaked in butter if you can tolerate it and it is on plan. The best thing to do is to check out the nutrition info on the website for this place if available. It is insane how many calories are packed into Red Lobster dishes for example!!

I will be 6 weeks post surgery when I go to dinner.  Do I need to worry about the fat content in the soup cream?  I found that 1 tbls. has 3-5 grams of fat.  I would probably have 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of soup if I don't have the crab cake.  Thanks for your advice and happy holidays to you!

I was not one to count fat grams either during my weight loss phase or now- so IMHO let that one go, assuming that you keep the overall calories in check. You are far more likely to trigger crappy eating by carbs or sugar, so I would for sure try to avoid that. Look to keep net carbs under 30 for the meal and that should keep the cravings at bay. That usually isn't that hard and it provides some options at the table.

I'm about the same distance out as you and I've had a crab cake.  It was very good, and I ate it for three meals. :)

Another possibility is to order the battered cod and remove all the breading and eat just the fish.

Although the crab cake would work too, especially in Maryland where they know how to make one. Don't forget the Old Bay!

Shrimp and scallops are my tummy's best friend. My tumm loves shrimp, it goes down easy.
