Hello, I am 9 days post op VSG and 47 yrs. old 5'4 266lbs ...I feel great with 0 complications is as if I never even had the surgery, been following the eating program, the problem is I have NO restriction and I'm very upset. I felt the restriction the first few days with liquids, and now it's gone! I am eating thinned s/f yogurt, baby food, thinned oatmeal, pureed soups  and protein shakes, I add protein powder to everything to get in my protein, drinking my fluids, keeping track on fitness pal. I got so desperate today I ate a whole banana just to see if I'd have restriction with solids but nothing. I feel like I went through the surgery for nothing, I researched for years and was well prepared to be nauseous, throwing up possibly, have no appetite, problems getting fluids in all in the beginning. But I've had NONE of that which is great but why NO RESTRICTION. I feel like a total failure, this was my last resort!!!

You have restriction. You just can't tell yet. Nerves were cut. You have to be careful and measure everything or you could hurt yourself or stretch your sleeve or spring a leak. Don't eat solids!! Be careful. Don't eat more than a few ounces! What does your plan say?

You won't really feel restriction yet.  Your nerves are healing so you can't gauge it.  Please don't try to eat something just to see if you have restriction because you can hurt yourself.   Don't worry the restriction will come.

Some of the things you mentioned (baby food, oatmeal, soups) often have more carbs than protein. It should be the opposite--more protein than carbs. Carbs will make you hungry fast, but proteins keep you full longer. And carbs cause cravings for more carbs. A banana is a carb fiesta--sugars and starch.

Try deli meat (watch the sodium), sashimi or something along those lines (seared tuna, grilled fish etc) or other soft meats/fish, if your plan allows it at this point.

I made friends w a girl who had her surgery the same day as me same hospital same surgeon she was down the hall from me and she has total restriction . How do you explain that? I can't believe this is happening. I feel like Its a bad dream . I want to feel like I can't take another bite or I'll be sick like everyone else who's had this surgery.

People are different and we all heal differently.  Some people swell a lot post-op and that swelling causes a sense of restriction.

Weigh and measure your food so you don't eat too much.  Stick to your recovery diet.

Most of us don't feel restriction until we get to solid foods and testing yourself while your stomach is healing is a very foolish thing to do.  You could easily damage yourself by overeating.

Right now, all of the nerves in your stomach were severed and they're healing.  Your stomach is currently a lying liar that lies and you can't trust anything you think it's telling you.

Follow your post-op diet, get your protein and liquids in, and give your body time to heal before you go experimenting and worrying.

You do have restrictions. For weeks 1-3 after surgery I was able to get in all my liquids and proteins but week 4 changed everything. For dinner tonight I wasn't even able to eat 1/4 cup of strained soup. Just give it time and please don't over due it you don't want to hurt yourself. Good luck with your journey.

you need to go back to your doctor so he can set up a EGD. Something has to be wrong if you dont feel any restriction.

This is not true at all. Most of us don't feel restriction until we get to solid foods.
