Hey guys Im about 2 months out....question having  a hard time telling the difference between hunger and if its just acid in my stomach?  I need some examples of how much and the times you guys are eating?  Also doctor says no to snaking but the nuetritionist says ok to snack...Seems like alot of what helped me loose weight pre op doesnt apply to post op...Thanks guys!

If tums or a PPI make the hunger go away it was acid.

At 2m out I was eating 3x a day with 2-3 "snacks" being milk or a protein drink.

I was off the PPI by 2m post op, but now at 11m post, I just started them again b/c I was noticing more "hunger" rumblings.  For the most part, the PPI has made that decrease, so I am thinking it was acid.

I've had the same experience regarding PPIs.  I took them for about 2 months post-op and then stopped.  I've had to take two 14-day courses of Nexium since then when I felt myself getting hungrier than normal and, each time, the 14 days of Nexium cleared things right up!

Are you taking a PPI such as prilosec or nexium?  If not, start one and see what that does for your hunger.  For most of us, it resolves the hunger.

I eat three meals a day with no snacks - my surgeon's plan is very specific about this.  (Once in a while I'll have a few slices of cheese as a snack depending on my activity, but I try really hard not to snack and succeed most of the time.)

My meals are 1 shake (30grams protein, unsweetened almond milk) and 2 solid meals that are mainly protein and no more than 4 ounces each.  I'm 10 months post-op and super pleased with my progress so far.  This feels like a way of eating that I'll be able to maintain for forever.

I absolutely had to eat 5-6 times a day and still do to keep my blood sugar levels stable.  If you are feeling "hungry" and it's not time then pop a Tums and see if it goes away and stays away.  If it does, then you just have acid.

Example of what I was eating at 2 months out:

B - protein shake, 1/2 banana

S - 3 slices deli lunch meat, slice of deli cheese

L - 2 oz. hamburger crumbles, couple slices of avocado

S - non-fat greek yogurt

D - 2 oz. grilled chicken

When I feel like I'm hungry I tell myself that it is either acid, take a Pepcid, or thirst, drink some water.  I have made up my mind that what I feel isn't going to be hunger and that seems to work.

My surgeon's plan is 3 meals a day but for the first six months to ALSO drink 3 protein drinks a day (with 15 grams of protein each).  He said that doing this optimizes weight loss during that "rapid weight loss phase".  But, I'm not supposed to EAT snacks now or ever again.

I do not subscribe to the eat three times a day philosophy. Like you, I'm a man and even in early post op I could not get sufficient calories in to support minimal protein requirements and body function unless I ate 4 to 5 times per day (that included 2 protein shakes and 3 meals).

Here's how I knew something was wrong in my sleeve with acid production. I would eat and within 30 or 45 minutes I would have a growling and rumbling in my stomach that made me really feel as if I were hungry. I knew logically there was no possible way that I was hungry after eating less than an hour ago. I talked with the doc and she was first worried about an ulcer, so I was put on carafate (which was an awful pain in the ass!) and when there was no change they put me on generic Protonix and WHAM, one dose and all symptoms went away. I've been on it ever since and am actually thinking I should try to wean myself off my once daily dose. I will tell you though, the PPI has been a life saver!

You may have to try different acid reducers...not all of them work for all people.  Just be persistent until you find the one that works for YOU.

Agreed. I went through 3 different kinds before I got to what actually helped me!
