paragard and vsg?
So I know that as women, we get the short end of the stick with sex. Hormonal birth control doesn't really work for me, it makes me moody, swollen, gain weight, get hot flashes, and zero libido. Plus ive read that it can cause stalls with vsg. Right now I use a diaphragm. This works for now but I know that with rapid weight loss it isn't very effective due to needing new sizes.
So I've ordered a Paragard, but I'm kind of nervous now. Anyone else use this? Is it effective with the vsg rate of weight loss? I'm kind of crampy all month anyway, so I'm worried I'll be in a lot of pain with Paragard. But I do NOT want an unplanned baby.
anyone else use Paragard?
Regardless of what you choose as your primary method of birth control post-op, it's wise to use a secondary form as well for the first year. Condoms would be a good option for that!

I don't have paragard, but I have a mirena. The mirena is a plastic IUD with progesterone that is released directly into the uterus in small amounts. I got my IUD specifically for my VSG surgery and discussed it ahead of time with my surgeon and nurse. I would make sure you have that specific discussion with your team as well to figure out what is best for you. I used to take birth control pills, but my program did not allow them for two months before or after surgery.
I don't think the mirena has caused stalls for me. Any stalls I've had, I pretty much know why they've occurred. I still get periods, and I think my cramping is worse, but I'm glad I'm not taking oral estrogen pills or having to depend on a pill!
I got the paragard after my vsg and I like it. I also don't like hormonal forms of bc so it was a good choice for me. Periods are a little heavier, but not too bad. I also love that it is good for 10 years so I don't have to worry about it again for ages!!
I've been taking Seasonique for years. And I've lost 130 pounds since Jan 2014. So I'm certainly losing weight while being on the pill.

Like Gwen, my doctor has put me on Seasonique birth control pills. My iron stores were terribly low and this (along with a prescription for iron) was one method of stopping my period and helping me retain my iron.
I do know some women who have had the Mirena IUD before/during weight loss who needed surgery to remove it after the weight loss... because the IUD had migrated and become embedded in uterine tissues and was causing a great deal of pain. Apparently, that is a risk for IUDs in general when a lot of weight is lost. Often a new IUD will need to be fitted. So I kept that in mind too when deciding to go with Seasonique.
