Maintenance/goal BMI?

Hello,

I'm wondering what BMI people have as their goal and what BMI people are at who consider themselves in maintenance. I have seen some threads about goal weight, but that doesn't correlate as easily as BMI. I am 5'6" and have a (dream) goal of 149, which correlates to a BMI of 24. At this time, two weeks post-op, that very much seems like a dream so I'm interested in input from people who are closer to their goal than I.

Thanks!

Laura

I'm the same the same height as you. And my dream goal which I hope to make it become true is 170. And so far being four weeks out I'm 70 pounds down. I can see this happening but it maybe a struggle after awhile. It's always good to set a goal and try to accompli**** Keep pushing forward and you will hit goal before you know it.

I am tall at 6'2''. I originally set my goal at a bmi of 24.9. Then right after surgery (2 weeks or so) I didn't think that was "realistic" and thought I would be content at 220 (much higher bmi, as 194 was the original goal weight). After a while I realized I was more scared to fail than anything given my prior history. I reset it at 24.9 and never looked back. I hit goal in 8 months. I have a couple of times popped above goal since then (over three years out), but have been able to reel it right back in. The majority of my maintenance has been at 185 pounds.

Go for your goal. Early out it seems impossible, but it is not. The months slip by. Each month won't be huge numbers, but that cumlative total is pretty darn amazing. Check my ticker to see what I mean. At first I was so dissapointed because my rate of loss was similar to my normal dieting routine. The differnce was is I didn't quit and then regain all of it back and then some.

I'm curious too, Laura.  I'm just starting the surgery process, so I am not sure what my goal is.  I'm 5'1" and according to the doctors my normal BMI should be 19-25 or so (100-130 pounds), but I weigh 409 lbs now (I'm female), and I don't know that I will ever be able to get that low with any WLS.  We'll see what lies ahead I suppose.

you can lose it all it just takes time , you need to judge how you feel nd how healthy you are

BMI is a very poor scale  to judge how much excess weight you have

if you look and fell great at 200 lb that might be the best weight for you

everyone losses at a different rate so of us take a few years to lose there needed weigh , if your older it takes longer women take longer than men, the heaver you start at the longer it may take to,lose the weight but if you stay on plan 98% of the time you will get there

I chose a tentative goal weight, and I have the weight my surgeon told me he wants to see me reach. I don't care about the BMI chart, and my professional support staff (nutritionist, counselor, surgeon, etc) have never discussed using BMI during goal setting.

I'm 5'7" & I pretty much picked a number that was on the high end of the BMI chart & picked 150. I figured whenever I get close to goal I'll reevaluate if that's where I want to be or not. I can't even remember what 150 looks like on me & that seemed far away when I started, but I take things a little at a time so the amount I have to lose won't seem so overwhelming.

Like rt now I'm 5 well now 6 pounds away from the maximum weight my portable foldup bike can hold, will go well below that, buy a bigger bike seat & put that bad boy right in my car & drive to the park & ride it. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

My goal was a bmi of 24.9.   I have hit it, and a little more.  Depending on how much weight you carry getting to a low bmi could be tricky bc our bodies have built a structure to support more weight - stronger bones & muscles.  Also unless you have plastics your skin will add to the weight.

I think a normal bmi is totally doable, but shooting for a 20 could be hard for some people.

Hi Laura,

I am the same height as you, 5'6", and I started out heavier than you, 285 lbs at my highest. My surgeon's goal for me was a BMI of 30, which I think was 184 lbs. My dream goal was to weigh 160, because I felt good at that weight in the past. I didn't know if it was really possible for me to get there. I wanted  to get down to a size 16, maybe a 14, if I was lucky. Well guess what, I'm maintaining at 142-144 lbs, BMI 23, and I wear a size 6, sometimes a 4. I honestly didn't even think that was possible because I don't have a small frame, but here I am, with a closet full of size smalls.
