If you google "hair loss after surgery"  you'll find some detailed articles explaining the process.

Here's one I just found:

http://johnowentoday.blogspot.com/2012/07/hair-loss-after-illness-or-surgery.html

Basically, our hair has a normal cycle of growth, and then latency where it stops growing, then it falls out and new hair replaces it.  Surgery just synchronizes the hair so that a large portion of our hair goes into latency at the same time.  It then starts to fall out together and grows back about 6 months later.

Its a bother, but the hair does grow back.  By about one year post op, you'll have lots of new hair filling in.

I started losing hair at 3 months post op.  The loss stopped in the 6 or 7th month post op.  During month 9, I had a healthy crop of short hairs standing straight up on top of my head.  By one year, my hair was getting back to normal.

best wishes,

Carol

Telogen Effluvium is why

In a nutshell, new growth is pushing out the old hair.

My dr told me that if you reach your protein goals your hair will thank you. I've also heard from the nutritionist that if you frequently don't get in enough protein it will be worse than if you did get lots in those first few months. I know there's alot more technical explanations.

I have never missed a day of reaching, or exceeding, my protein goals...have taken Biotin since a month before surgery and still lost hair starting about 3 months out!  Good news is at almost 6 months it's stopped!!

5'5" 64 year old; HW 219; SW 199; CW 129; GW 145ish (original)...now on to "ideal" (138)...got that...now a few spare (132)...got that one, too! Now for the 120's!! Made them...now for the "dream" weight...125! Well, that one's proving to be a little tougher!

Thanks for the information.  I just have never heard of hair loss after any surgery.  It must be associated with weight loss surgery because of our diet and lack of some vitamins.

Again .. read about Telogen Effluvium.  This occurs after surgeries, childbirth, any big trauma to the body.  It is NOT significant to wls.
