Gall Bladder Medication

All is going well on this end since having surgery 5 months ago, no issues or complaints. I have lost a total of 87 pounds and 64 of them since the surgery 4 1/2 months ago. I think I'm doing pretty well and following things very well so far. I have a question about the gall bladder medication and I have to be on it for 6 months, but I wanted to know why the Dr. has you stop it at 6 months and in particular if you still have a lot more weight to lose? I will need to lose about 75 more pounds after the six month mark and wanted to know if I could and should stay on it for another 6 months.

I am hoping to avoid any gall bladder issues and prevent the need for another surgery if possible. Does this make sense? Has anyone stayed on it longer that 6 months?

I asked my surgeon this and he said that studies had shown there was no benefit to taking it longer than 6 months.

In my own research, I came across too many sources to dismiss that gallbladder problems with massive weight loss are normally a result of low fat intake, so I've made sure not to go the low fat route.  But then ElizaM is having gallbladder issues and I'm pretty sure she does high fat.  So who knows :P  I figure it's just a roll of the dice and you either luck out or you don't.  Knock on wood, I took actigal for 6 months and I've kept a moderate fat diet, and I've had zero problems.

I didn't ever take gallbladder medicine.  I had my gallbladder out three weeks ago, 11 months post op.  I didn't do a low fat diet at all.  Since being able to eat "normal" food I've eaten bacon, full fat cheese, steak, etc.

I started taking it at first, but decided that for me, I didn't want any more medications.  I still have my gall bladder, but I did lose a little slower than most and wonder if I'd lost a lot faster if I'd still have it (probably not).

I took the actigall for a whole year and as for weight loss I lost a whooping 20 lbs that year. Then  about a year later I had to have my gall bladder removed, so much for the actigall!! I think the whole thing is silly.

My surgeon doesn't put his patients on actigall at all. He says studies show no difference when using it. I still have my gallbladder, for what that's worth.

I was allergic to the gallbladder meds, so my surgeon did not have me use anything the whole duration. No issues.
