Terrified of Surgery!

I am having this surgery because I am TERRIFIED of surgery. I know this sounds like a crazy comment, but it is so true. I am afraid if I don't do this, I will have to have many, far more dangerous surgeries in the future..... OPEN HEART, JOINT REPLACEMENT, BACK...ETC. I really know I am doing the right thing. I want to be healthy and happy again. I want to feel like shopping with my daughter and playing with my son. I want to live life, not simply exist. I've got this!

Yes you do! And because you're getting it and acknowledging your fear - you're going to do great! Your reasons are the same reasons I got it as well, and my husband too.

I had planned on popping in to point out that what you should be terrified of is the health consequences of obesity. But I see you got that! On a kinder, gentler note- this surgury is pretty easy compared to some of the surgeries you might have to endure when dealing with the fallout of obesity. I have had a slew due to cancer- and Vsg hands-down was the easiest of them. So, take the "easy" path and improve your health and quality of life! Truly- the surgury is not that bad. It is normal to be nervous, but you will get through it and be so grateful you did!

Thank you! I hope you are doing well. I know this is a good decision....I'll just be glad when the surgery is in the rear view.

Best of luck to you. The sleeve was my best decision.

CJ, here's a post written earlier by frisco, a 6-year sleeve veteran. Judging from the responses he got, I don't think there's a more honest portrait of what sleeve surgery can and cannot do.

I was terrified of surgery, too. -- to the point that I didn't have WLS until I was 64 and so obese that I was looking at a downward spiral of less and less mobility and poorer health for the rest of my shortened life. I finally had to get to the point where I felt I had no choice but to have the surgery - even if it killed me, it would be better than the way things were going. So I was resigned.

Then the surgery was a piece of cake! Really. Surgical techniques are so much more sophisticated than they were decades ago. Anesthesia is better. Its amazingly better. I was very lucky. I had little pain, no nausea(thanks to the anti-nausea drugs I requested) and I went home the next morning, a day early because I was doing so well.

So try not to worry until you know you have something to worry about. With any luck, you'll breeze right thru, like I did.

I always feel like I should add that the recovery and getting used to the new tummy was not fun, but always manageable. Its not an easy process but it wasn't the surgery itself that was the hard part.

Best of luck with your weight loss journey.

Carol

You got this!!! You will do amazing. I've had over 14 surgeries in the last 10 yrs. and many were from obesity so you truly are helping avoid future surgeries.
