I know this gets brought up a lot.  I have a friend who is hoping to get VSG and is lactose intolerant.  During the first phase of liquid diet post op, what did you or others use??  Brian

If you are using 100% whey protein Isolate protein powders they are lactose free. That is really what you should be using anyway as it is the best absorbed. Whey concentrate has some. I use Fairlife Milk, Higher protein, lower carbs and also Lactose free. I also use an unflavored protein powder and can stir it into things like broth/soup.

NYMom222 which unflavored protein powder do you use and does it mix well?

I'll hopefully be having surgery in July of this year and am looking for a good suggestion on an unflavored protein to mix with broths/soups etc.

Syntrax Nectar Unflavored whey protein powder is one of the powders recommended by my nutritionist and is the one I used. I bought it on Amazon for about $18 for a 1 lb container.

It dissolves well, but be sure to read about mixing it in very high temperatures. Good luck!

Whey Isolate is the only lactose free protein powder that is easy for a post op to absorb.  Many proteins are made to be slow absorbing for body builders.  Post ops need fast absorbing proteins like whet isolate.  Any protein with whey concentrate, calcium-caseinate, or milk casian contains lactose.  Many lactose intolerant people can still eat Greek yogurt and cheese because the enzyme added to make the product uses up most of the lactose in the process.  Mix powders with water, coffee, or sugar free nut milks (cashew, almond, soy).
