A day late but, 4 years post op

Well, yesterday marks my official 4 years since I had VSG. At (almost 25 years old then) it was the best decision I have ever made. I have zero regrets - even with a regain and semi currently struggling all around right now.

I was born a 10lb baby. I was always heavy. I remember being in grade school, missing school often to go to NYC hospital to have testing done to me. My parents would joke and tell me it's to make sure I had a brain LOL. I was huge. I had breasts at age 7. I had my period at age 9. I thought it was normal. But I didn't feel normal when it  came to my tiny friends.

Fast forward to Oct 2012, my mom. My mom was the reason I am like this today. I may be 222lbs, but I was 326lbs. She knew I had finally made an appointment for an annual physical which I had dreaded for years. The words that came from her mouth, 'why don't you ask about that lapband thing'. I died. I went up to my bedroom, called my best friend (who had RNY back in 2007 I think), and cried. Until she explained how my mom was scared for me. Reminded me of all I went through has a child having tests, to find out why I was so heavy. That was the night I made my decision to look into Bariatric Surgery, and life changed, forever.

Surgery day I was about 307. My highest was 326. My lowest around 2 years out from VSG was 180. I am currently 222 (and super emotional, stressed, angry, yet happy), I know this was the best thing for me. If I didn't have this surgery, I would be closer to 400lbs. WHAT. Mind you, I had nothing wrong with me except just being fat. My levels were fine, no diabetes, not even pre diabetic. No thyroid issues. Just fat.

Even at 222lbs, I still remind myself that I am not 326lbs. I have had, and still do have, an amazing support group of friends and family. I also now have the most amazing man in my life. Again, if I never had the VSG, I would never have (had the courage) to have met him (let alone anyone). Even though I am back into L/XL shirts, and a tight size 14, or loose 16 jeans, I am not a size 3x or a 26 jeans. Its something I have been reminding myself of lately - since I am really emotional about this regain. It's all on me. Nobody but me. So little by little I am being more cautious and getting back to square 1.

I also thank you all for the support, encouragement, and everything else. We are all in the same / similar boats. With out this support on here, it would be much more difficult.

Thank you for sharing your story. I love hearing from those who are years out from surgery and still think it is the best thing they did. I'm only one week out (and a rough week at that) and am encouraged by reading your struggles and positive attitude. Be kind to yourself because we all know that beating ourselves up doesn't solve the problem, just makes us enter the downward spiral that got us to surgery in the first place. Losing and keeping off 100 lbs is no small feat! It's amazing! You will get yourself back on track and this regain will just be a speed bump in your rear-view mirror.

All the best,

This is a powerful story.  You make a good point.  As I struggle with a few pounds here and there, I should always remember that I'd be over 400 pounds by now if I hadn't had the surgery.  We have to keep the discipline and commitment to our healthy eating, and even as we struggle, we can still be proud of what we've overcome!

Congratulations for getting back on track, and fighting for your health.  You are doing great.
