Sour Throat and Eating

Soooo. Whenever I eat or drink, I feel that my esphogeous is dilated and sore. What's up? Is this normal. My anxiety is telling me that after years of lapband living. My esophagus isn't happy to return to a pressurized environment and I will eventually lose function of throat? I will call my surgeon but...he's not going to say much anyway. I am 2 m I nths post op.

What dose is your PPI?  I'm doing well on 40 mg protonic daily.  I used to do Prilosec 20mg 2 tabs 2 x a day when I had my band  fail...

It's 40mg. So you think the only reason is acid? I take one in the morning and now don't have much symptoms. But this pressure snd tightness in my throat. Scared of permanently damaging my esphogeous

It could be acid.  It could be a few things.

Diet can cause reflux, too.  I had this exact same issue with reflux, and it was drastically improved by eliminating dairy and gluten (I have Celiac and other autoimmune crap anyway).  I find carbs of any sort, and whey protein, make it worse.

It is definitely good to be checked out.  The good news is any damage takes months, or years, to occur, and in a way it's fortunate you and I both had physical symptoms since we were able to find out.  Often reflux can be silent and cause damage for years.

If you don't wish to see your surgeon, you could always get a referral to a regular general surgeon, too, as they also treat stuff like this.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

I don't eat anything that is gluten based now or milk products with the exception of premium products.

Dr. Gagner (bleh) wants me to take 40mg if pantaloc in the evening and 40mg in the morning. I feel that's too much for the attacks I get every couple of days. So I asked if I can take a otc prevacid or zantac and he's okay with it. Might pop one now.

On another note, I continue to have this mettalic taste in my mouth. Google told me it's a side effect of ursodiol! But not sure if it's acid of ursodiol.

I am so over this, let's work our way up to esophageal cancer!

The taste could be due to low carb/high protein diet.  Or Chinese pine nuts.  Or any number of medications.

At two months out, taking a good PPI is a wise idea.  Have you tried Nexium or something that's not as strong as Protonix?

That's interesting I didn't realize porontix was stronger than nexium! I thought they were similar. No, I am using my surgeons subscription. But will be running out soon. So will ask my pcp to switch to nexium and try it out.

I am also buying Ultra DLG? Suppose to help with mucus production to combat acid.

Nexium is OTC in the US, but I think you're in Canada, so I don't know what its status is there.

It's a prescription here. But perhaps still not as strong as prontix

I will need to start looking into cell generation research...maybe sign up for a clincal study and regrow my stomach. All things are possible lol.

Many things could cause this - any sort of allergy or intolerance might be a culprit.  For example, this happens to me if I accidentally ingest monk fruit extract (it's high in fructose, I've got fructose malabsorption).

It might also be as simple as your throat taking a really long time to heal after having a tube shoved down it.

If your surgeon sucks, I'd also recommend following up with a different doctor.  Perhaps a GI doc.
