okay.....so, last night I tried Zumba - actually survived 12 minutes......I have never felt so totally uncoordinated as I did last night......not sure I'll do it again.....BUT, I spent 30 minutes on the elliptical and did 30 minutes on resistance machines. Came home zombie pooped, but feeling much better after a nice long shower. The way I'm working out, I should have a six-pack in about 20 years!!

I'd love to try Zumba, but I'm nowhere NEAR coordinated enough! Doing one thing with hands while feet do something else? NOT A CHANCE.

Julie, you can start out just doing the legs...as you get used to it, the arms will figure themselves out.  I say give it a try!!  :)

Hi Anita and Julie,

May I share?  I have lived through Jazzercise, Richard Simmons, step, all the boxing classes and if you were one move off it was like the end of the world.  Zumba is the one place you can do your own thing and don't worry be happy!  I don't jump, I was rejected when I tried out for a music video   but LOVE Zumba for that reason.

Anita, if you were in a  class that the instructor did not make this clear and you didn't laugh then you were in the wrong class.  I can't tell you how many times I turned right when the entire class turned left.

I hope you try it again and go in with just the thought of having fun, move to the music and do your own thing.

Take care,

Kathy

Thanks Kathy.....everyone here has been so positive on this thread.....THANKS. I will try again....I think there were two problems (not counting the facts that a) I'm old, b) it's been a long time since I've been this active, c) I have a cranky meniscus in my left knee and I was worried about causing a problem and d) did I mention that I'm old?????? I'm 71 and although my head still thinks I'm 35, my body keeps saying....try that dopey and I'll show you who is boss here......LOL.  Seriously, part of the problem for me was the instructor who not only showed up 10 minutes late, she couldn't figure out the equipment to get the music going, and there was a woman next to me who apparently is unfamiliar with personal space and she kept moving closer and closer to the point that one time she swung her arms and if I hadn't ducked right at that moment, I'd have gotten clocked in the head......and the dingbat not only didn't apologize, she laughed.

Yes, I'll try again, but with a different instructor. Next week I think I'm going to try yoga.......

In the meanwhile, I'm actually enjoying the gym.....I'm trying to go at least 4 times a week and each time I stay for about an hour and 15 minutes.......and tonight I did a little bit of time in the sauna too (I'm claustrophobic, but I managed alright because it's a pretty big one and you can see through the door too). I'm working on it!!! One day at a time!

Another thing to remember is that most of them that don't miss a beat, have probably been going for years, and have a lot of the songs/routines memorized. So maybe they look like they know what they're doing because they've been going forever. All the more reason to keep at it! ð?'?ð?'?

Do you have access to Zumba Gold?  I believe that's the Zumba that's geared toward older people.  If you have a local senior center, you might also have access to fitness classes there that are specifically geared toward your age range.

That said, I think that age is largely a mindset.  I know many 70+ year olds who do the Zumba classes I do, and all the other fitness classes I enjoy as well.  So if that's what you want, there's no reason you can't get to that point.  But if you feel your age impedes you, you might want to look into classes that are specifically designed for older people.

I tried Zumba with my niece....talk about uncoordinated!  I was going one way and the others were going the other. I thought I could keep up but it felt like Big Bird vs Ernie and friends. There were others older than me be-boppin' perfectly. You would have thought I was the worst dancer earlier in my life.  I actually had rhythm then (or maybe I just thought I did) lol.

Great job on the elliptical and machines! Don't feel bad not everyone has the "Zumba" gene smirk.
