Protein supplement powders

I am getting vsg probably in July. I know the dietician wants me to use expensive Unjury powder to supplement my protein. I am on a very limited budget and am afraid I may not be able to purchase these needed things. How often do you have to use them? Is it right after surgery or just in phase two of the post op? Any information would be helpful!

I use Optimum Nutrition whey protein powder - the only times I've NEEDED to use it are during the pre-op liquid diet (10 days for me, 5 shakes a day) and then the post-op liquid diet (14 days for me, 3 shakes a day). I needed to use it during the pureed stage at maybe 1-2 shakes per day in order to reach my protein goals.

That said, there are people here who never use protein shakes. I know with Fairlife milk on the market, that's a great option for protein without powder. And, remember, you'll be saving a LOT of money by not eating all the food you used to eat.

Thank you so much for this info especially about the fair life milk! Our Kroger carries that and I think I am going to take advantage of it!

I have some vanilla protein powder that I have yet to use (mainly because I'm not sure what to do with it). I'm 5 weeks out and once I started solids and began eating meat again I haven't needed to supplement with powders or shakes (unless I didn't plan a meal ahead of time, like last night). My surgeon had me on full liquids right away and I was drinking protein shakes for every meal the first two weeks.

I used Isopure Zero Carb unflavored protein powder, that way I wasn't locked into a single flavor and it was the best buy for the money. Mixed it with skim milk and used my own flavoringsyou get in the spices department at your local grocery like coconut, pineapple, banana, vanilla, and cocoa. That way I could have whatever flavor I felt like that day. Tasted so much better than the pre-mixed ones.

I used it for 2 week pre-op liquid diet, and for 1 week post-op liquid, through soft foods phase, up until I was allowed solid proteins. (Every plan is different so yours might have shorter phases.)

I supplemented with it for a while as well, because you can eat so little for the first several weeks, it was hard for me to get my protein in.

You'll be spending a LOT less on food after surgery than you were before.

Sure, it seems like vitamins, calcium, protein powder, etc are a big new expense after surgery. But before surgery, we really were not very aware of how much we were eating, or what it was costing us.
