10 month postop and now dysphagia symptoms?

Hi all! I'm now 11 month postop VSG but I started getting symptoms about a month ago. Suddenly, everything I eat feels like it is stuck at the base of my throat. I haven't changed my diet at all or my eating habits or chewing, etc. literally nothing has changed. The feeling lasts for hours. Anyone else experience this? If you did, what did your doc say/do? I have an appt. next week but looking to hear from fellow sleevers. Wondering if I might need a scope or dilation. Thanks in advance!

I had a weird issue that sounds similar when I was 3 months post-op. Basically it was like my restriction kicked in FULL FORCE again and I couldn't eat anything because it would get stuck feeling somehow and I'd have to cough it up.

Luckily this was right before my 3 month surgeon follow up..

He put me on an anti-spasmodic (I'm sorry, I forget the name since it was so long ago) and I had to take that for 10-14 days. I also had to revert my diet and do 3 days of full liquids, 3 days of pureed foods, 3 days of soft foods, and back to my forever diet.

This fixed the problem and I've never had a reoccurrence. So, yes, definitely talk to you doc about this!

Thanks for your story. Sadly, I can't get into see my surgeon (6 hours away) so I may try the 3, 3 and 3 for ****s and giggles and see where it gets me.

I tried to find the name of the medication my surgeon gave me but no luck. Sorry. I remember it was a smooth muscle antispasmodic. If it hadn't solved the problem, I'm sure I would have needed a scope and possible dilation.

Do you have access to a GI doctor closer?

Was the med called reglan? That's a common anti spasmodic...

That's the one thing I'm sure it's not - I had it years ago for misdiagnosed IBS and it was not kind to my body!

I'm about 9 months post op and I had something similar around the 6 month mark. My surgeon seems to think I developed worsening of my acid reflux. It was very very mild prior to surgery and I maybe took a PPI every other day. Neither My Upper GI nor my my EGD showed signs of it. I developed the feeling of a swollen throat and dysphagia. At first it came and went every couple of days but then it became constant. Did you have issues with acid reflux prior to surgery? It might be something to check out. I've been on carafate for 3 months to help coat the esophagus and I Check in next week as well to see how it's doing. Keep us posted and I hope they get it figured out soon.

Thanks for your input. No, I didn't have any acid issues preop. I will definitely let you all know!

Can you do a phone or email consult with your surgeon? My surgeon is also about 6 hours away and that's what I do if something questionable comes up. It doesn't sound like it's something that would need direct hands on examination, and if you need to do an upper GI or some other tests, that can be done locally and the results sent to him.

I was diagnosed with dysphagia while being tested prior to my revision to RNY because of severe reflux. My symptoms were a bit different. I actually had/have trouble swallowing. Swallowing is not automatic for me and I have to actually think about it and physically work to make it happen. I had a manometry test to actually test the force of my swallows. I failed all 8 water swallows and all but 2 swallows with applesauce. I would definitely get in touch with your surgeon, via phone if need be, and look into the issue. As I said, mine was a different issue, but at least getting it in front of your surgeon will get you on the road to resolution.
