have you saved on grocery spending since your surgery? And so, how much would you estimate that to be?

I can and I will

Yes and no? I eat less food, but I buy things like protein bars, shakes and chips which are not cheap. So I'd say it is either a wash or I might be spending a bit more for my at home food. On the other hand, I always bring my lunch to work now so I save the cost of buying it there and when we go out to eat (once a week minimum), I usually just get an appetizer and at most one glass of wine (so probably half the spend there).

In summary, I think if you do all your own cooking and don't supplement with special protein items too much, you may spend less.

Maybe first couple of months? But meds and vitamins took that away. Plus copays.

If you are a lot of takeouts, are out a lot - yes, you can expect to save money. Otherwise - not so much.

Initially I had to rotate my protein powder - I would like one - hated others- then streets hating that one and had to buy a few others to see what my pouch would tolerate.

My doc put us on PPI floor the first 6 months, and every the one from Costco was significant. Add chewable vitamins, other meds you may need to take, etc, etc...

Probably not. While I, personally, consume less food I have to buy more animal protein which tends to be expensive. And, any savings would be negated by other costs such as vitamins, exercise clothing, exercise memberships, deciding to live life, going back to college, plastic surgery, etc.

WLS has definitely not been a money saving journey for me :)

I actually saved money. Less take out and less junk food. More cooking which is cheaper. I use the protein shakes, 1 to 2 cases a month. I used a PPI the first year with a 10 monthly copay for 12 months. Vitamins aren't too bad at around 20 a month. Total monthly 80.00. I easily spent that and more eating fast food daily.

Oh after reading Gwen's post, I could count my gym membership in the expense but I consider that my entertainment expense because the kids like all the classes and pool that they have to offer. Also I got a zoo membership and family season passes to an amusement park. I'm actually healthy enough to walk at the zoo and thin enough to fit on the roller coaster. Overall I think I am still coming out ahead money wise when you consider all the long term costs of being overweight.

I ate a lot pre-surgery. Way too much. I don't do fast food anymore which is a huge savings as I used to buy for what seemed like a family of hungry lumberjacks and my grocery spending is maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of what it was?

I think I'm in the breaking even category. I eat so much less, but I spend more on meat and fresh foods than I ever did before. Between that, and the vitamins and supplements, it's about the same.

I expected this huge savings since I'd eat so much less. But now, I don't care about it because I realize I'm eating SO MUCH better than I ever did before, so much healthier, it's worth the expense.

I feel I spend less because im not eating out all the time. Plus its just me. I don't have to buy protein shakes now.

Much less. I eat lunch and snacks for four days on $11.98. I'm drinking 4-6 32 oz containers of crystal light and powerade zero mixed with water, it comes to $.24 per 32oz. I used to spend $20-25 a day on the same. My food quantity at dinner has gone down quite a bit as well. Doing my blood work has shown no need for supplemental vitamins so I don't have that expense either.
