I have just received my insurance denial for surgery, and I'm so upset! I just fail to understand the ignorance and prejudice surrounding obesity being a disease and not some "elected" surgery! I mean, who would choose this existence? I have a phobia of flying which keeps me from Mexico, and can't afford cash prices. I feel doomed! Anyone out there have any helpful tips?

First and foremost, DON'T GET DISCOURAGED! What insurance do you have dear?

It's United Healthcare. It's the Choice Plus plan for my company. Thanks for the encouragement. I need something positive to hang onto.

Why were you denied? Did they deny you for cause, or does your policy just simply not cover WLS? It makes a huge difference.

Unfortunately, insurance companies are most interested in profits. It's just a badly broken system.

Reason was no coverage for wls. But, they said I could appeal. Don't know why they would recommend that if they absolutely don't cover? I want it now and avoid all the crap insurance would require, but, don't have that luxury. Congratulations on your weight loss! What are all the numbers for?

I'm not sure why tgey tell people to appeal when they are not covered, but they do. It seems cruel.

The numbers are pounds lost in each month -- M1, M2, etc.

Too far to drive, and scared to fly...I have never flown.

It might be wise to work with a therapist about your fear of flying, if you're not already. Perhaps you could try taking some shorter trips?
