Why you need to check PTH even if you have a sleeve.

My PTH was 107 today. I had it checked as a baseline to compare to via DS surgery. (Ferritin was 79 if you're curious, so working on that too, though it's 'normal'.)

107 is very high. I take all my bariatric vitamins, so something may be afoot with the vitamins or biologically. Going to switch vitamin formulations, probably, to fix the issue.

I am not upset because I am all over fixing this. However, this is the moral of the story: take vitamins of the correct formulation, and also check your darn labs!

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

Yup. PTH is super important to check. When it's high, that means that your blood is leeching calcium from your bones. (If you haven't had a DEXA scan, you should get one soon.)

Just about to schedule one, in fact!

I may have to change my bariatric vitamins, which is a pain in the butt and inconvenient, however it's less inconvenient than, say, permanent bone density loss. I'll take early detection and new vitamins for $500, Alex.

Possible it's the Celiac or Hashimoto damage, too. Again, inconvenient tests await, but being unable to walk at 60 is grossly more inconvenient, so I gladly will deal with it now.

The really inconvenient thing is needing to retest once you change your vites. Bah!

I take this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NRQDT70/ since it's got all the other supporting cast of characters that help maximize calcium absorption. Sadly they're horse pills and I have to take six a day. But.. oh well.

I will check them out! I was using Jarrow Bone-up, which are pretty decent. Still, the PTH number is wonky. Thank you, Gwen:)

I do have issues swallowing big pills, but we will give it a whirl. I see the new nutritionist wednesday, too, and already made an appointment to figure out what else needs to be done with my PCP.

Have you tried the patch? No idea if it is something that would work for your situation, but I have had great luck with them so far.

My PTH is high and has remained high over a few blood tests. I did a 25 urine collection and that was a bit high too. I'm scheduled for another bone density scan at the end of the year (I had one last year which showed beginning stages of osteopenia . . . all of which explains why I now have an endocrinologist on my "team")

Anyway . . . I'm being monitored closely and will likely be referred out to a surgeon for an ultrasound to see if there's maybe a parathyroid tumor.

I have Hashimoto's and my thyroid is only at 5-10% of its normal function due to damage. I also have nodules, so I made an appt. with my PCP to see where we go on that front. For now, I am just taking calcium citrate until my sleeve weeps for mercy.

My PTH was high, but not that high. I was up to 2500 of calcium citrate (500 x 5 times per day). D3, K, magnesium, everything else was great, except PTH.

I had 3 DEXAs, each 2 years apart, and was having bone loss. I switched to patch multis, and a patch calcium/D3 every day. My last PTH was in the middle of normal. I haven't had another DEXA though. It's on my list.

For everyone that thinks you don't need a DEXA because you are too young, or don't need to supplement because you only have a sleeve, listen to Donna. Be proactive. We do this for our health, and burying our heads in the sand is not healthy.
