Did you have nausea after VSG?

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for answering all of my questions. I look forward to sharing with others after I have had my procedure done. I am scheduled to have VSG the beginning November out-of-state (3.5 hours away). I plan to come in on Monday for the pre-op, have surgery on Tuesday and then leave on Wednesday for home, assuming all goes well.

I have been reading recently that nausea can be a side effect of VSG, which makes sense. I am wondering how many of you suffered from it and for how long. I am terrified of having nausea for days. I'm thinking maybe I may give myself an extra day or two post-surgery before I go home just in case I struggle with it and/or any other issues.

So, how did you feel after surgery? Were you nauseous? If so, how long afterward and how did you deal with it.

Thank you all again.

Paige

I only had nausea immediately post-op and zofran took care of it.

If you're worried about nausea - ask for a patch before surgery. And make sure to get a prescription filled for zofran. Keep hydrated because nausea can happen from dehydration, and keep on top of stomach acid which can also lead to nausea.

Thanks, Gwen! I am SO HAPPY to hear that you only had it right after post-op. I will make a plan to stay on top of dehydration and the stomach acid.

The only nausea I had was when they got me up to walk in the hospital. It made me dry heave (which was such a weird sensation because it was nothing like throwing up before VSG). As soon as the anesthesia totally wore off, I didn't feel any nausea at all.

Severe nausea 1st couple of days, went away as soon as Zofran kicked in each time. Also emphasized to anesthesiologist that anaesthesia gives me severe nausea post-op, so he included anti-nausea in my ****tail.

They kept me on anti-emetics (nausea meds) around the clock in the hospital and I continued them at home for the first several days and I never felt nauseated during that time. I do feel nauseated occasionally now, but that seems to be in relation to taking my multivitamins, so I'm careful to keep onsansetron (Zofran) handy.

I didn't suffer from any nausea. But my surgeon is a bit unconventional. She had me drinking broth and eating jello the evening of the surgery and there was no swallow test. She said she tests the pouch before she closes me up so why should she want to test again the next day. I love her.

I had no nausea at any point, though a couple of others who were in the hospital at the same time I was did. At later group meetings those who had it early mostly reported that it resolved within a day or 2 unless they weren't hydrating enough.

I have very intense nausea for 36 hours post surgery that they treated with IV meds. I threw up (or tried, there was nothing in there) every hour or so. Then it went away and I was fine and haven't had any since.
