Bad breath

Since surgery it has been horrible! I know it's because of low carb diet; I'm 99% protein. I'm neurotic about hygeine, & any type of b.o.-can't stand it in others, & don't know what to do. My very honest daughter tells me that even the strongest mint gum doesn't always mask it. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you might be in Ketosis, where you aren't supplying enough instant energy to your body so it's burning fat for fuel. This is a good thing, but things like bad breath or a metallic taste in your mouth are common symptoms. To flush away those ketones and lessen the side effects, drink ALOT.

Exactly what Valarie said, Ketosis, it is the result of building up for acids when Fat is burned. I went through something similar when I tried juicing, especial at night. Juicing was great and I was burning fat insanely but it is not practical long hall and gross..lol. Is it a stinky but sweet smell? You are burning fat which is great right! The less fat you have to burn the better later. So see it as a temporary stage! More to look forward to when you reach your end goal?

I think I noticed it more then any one else. I think my super hero skill is smell. Derp.

This to shall pass. Now I know that it might come back I am going to get buy stock is PURR gum.

I know it's ketosis am hoping someone has a magical remedy, so my breath smells like again ;) My daughter& I have hyper sensitive olfactory senses, & she's making me neurotic, especially since I deal with people face to face all day.

I have hyper smell as well. I wish I had a suggestion. Brushing your tongue is important though. The acid and bacteria hide out there.

You likely know this. Sorry I could not be more help.

Is ketosis what causes a sort of...white build up on the tongue? That's the only way I can describe it. A little bit into eating normal foods I noticed it and it drives me crazy. I bought a tongue scraper for it.

No the ketosis does not cause the white. The white is bacteria on the little feelers of the tongue. I forget the name. But the acid from burning fat soaks in the bacteria on the tongue (whit stuff) making it smell worse.

My mom is a dentist and I know way more then I wish I ever know about the mouth. Lol

Boo. Idk where this bacteria is coming from lol! I am pretty particular about mouth hygiene, I brush every meal. Probably just my body still out of whack from my sudden weight loss.

It is pretty common. Has nothing to do with your cleanliness. So do not feel bad. I brush my teeth and tongue 4 times a day and it happens.

No worries about it. :o)

You might have thrush. Do you have asthma or other respiratory problems that you require a steroid inhaler or something like advair or spiriva?
