Gained already...is this normal...?

So I was a little disappointed this morning when I hopped on the scale and gained 1.5 pounds. I worked my ass off this weekend working out with cardio and I understand that muscle develops and the inches go down while the scale may go up a bit but it's only been 16 days since surgery and I've been losing pretty steadily 1-2 pounds per day. Just started on soft foods, still mostly drinking protein shakes and a yogurt to keep my protein up since eating a small amount of chicken isn't going to give me the protein I need just yet, and I'm slowly trying to replace with food...one little meal at a time. I've heard of the three week stall and all but to gain overnight?

Guess I'm a little discouraged...as I didn't expect to see that happen this soon in the whole process. Will continue to eat and drink what I have been and continue the cardio and pray the morning will show better results...and maybe I should stop checking weight daily?

That is annoying and disappointing! That said, it is impossible for you to gain 1.5 lbs of fat overnight. This might be a fluke related to your new exercise regiment, diet changes, your cycle, water retention, constipation, or who knows what. It will be gone soon. And DAMN! 1-2lbs per day? I?m jealous.

Do you weigh every day? If you do, you will see those fluctuations. Your diet change will also cause temporary retention. It will pass. As long as you aren't going insane with eating and tracking, I'm sure you're fine :) I know the anxiety monster over that number though!

Yeah I've been weighing every day. Once I move to a regular diet in a couple weeks, my nutritionist suggested weighing only every 1-2 weeks and not daily, and I can see why. I guess I panicked this morning...that anxiety monster likes to ride around on my shoulders. Must be a nice view from there, hah!

Thank you, though. I definitely needed a little reassurance that this is okay today, especially after working so so hard this weekend.

Remember that when you reach your goal, you probably won't even remember that there were annoying fluctuations on the way there :) Or, if you do remember, you'll chuckle about them in retrospect.

Your anxiety going down this path can be greatly reduced if you do not pair up exercise with daily weight loss. It happens very frequently despite the type of surgery.

Exercise is a good thing. Don't get me wrong. But what really is causing the drastic weight loss in the first year is restriction and diet. You are going to lose a whole lot of weight this year.

I was told weigh weekly during weight loss and daily in maintenance. I think it's a good idea as you will make yourself crazy with fluctuations. I also kept an old school notebook and wrote down my weight every monday. Sometimes when you think you aren't loosing, you realize you are. Daily weighing will make you crazy, but it's hard not to do.

Totally normal. Most of us are only cleared for walking for the first 6 weeks post-op, so there's a chance that "working your ass off" overdid it and your body is rebelling through water retention and higher cortisol levels.

Daily weight fluctuations are also normal, weight can fluctuate 5-7 pounds per day just because of water retention, etc.

I recommend that you start using something like Trendweight.com to let yourself focus on the trend of your weight instead of daily fluctuations if the fluctuations are going to bother you. Using Trendweight really saved me a lot of heartache!

When I was at goal and below my weight could fluctuate within 4 lbs, +2, -2 lbs.

It is water retention, dehydration, swelling, lack of BM, and hormonal changes.

I was 142 and I could see 139.5- 144.

I am a little bit bigger now, so I see up to 3 lbs variation from the average weight.

FYI: my weight in the morning, after BM, used to be at least 2 lbs less than my evening weight. Yes - there was a time I was obsessed and I used to weigh myself multiple times a day. Therapy helped me get over that and now I have much healthier approach to the scale and the number on a scale. I now often don't bother taking my shoes off when weighing in doc office. I no longer care if my weight is a pound or 2 higher.

Ditto about the shoes at the doctor's office. I no longer actually care what the scale at the doctor's office says. It's sort of totally awesome and freeing!
