I am 6 weeks post sleeve surgery. I am not able to get all my water or protien down. I am trying to eat soft foods but everything i try to eat makes me want to throw up or it just turns in my stomach. I almost to the point of regreting having the surgery. I take small bites and i eat slow but the only thing that helps are fruit smoothies and chucks of cheese. I am starting to get depressed that this will be my forever life.

First - call your surgeon's office.

Second - I would highly recommend that you stick to liquids for a little bit longer. It sounds like your body is telling you that it's not ready for soft foods yet.

Your number one job is hydration. Until you can manage 64+ ounces of liquid a day, don't stress too much about the protein. You might need to experiment with different liquids - some people have better luck with hot tea, warm broth, cold water, luke warm crystal light, etc. Experiment until you figure out what you CAN tolerate. You should also experiment with different protein shakes. For example, I prefer optimum nutrition double rich chocolate mixed in almond milk and think all the ready made shakes taste disgusting.

Experiment until you figure out what you can tolerate and THEN start trying soft foods like yogurt and cottage cheese.

Post-op plans are one size fits all and people aren't. So sometimes we need to go slower than our plans indicate.

Please, skip the fruit smoothies. Its tgge last thing you need, and a habit that will absolutely derail your weight loss.

Concentrate on zero calorie liquids. Hot, cold, flavored, unflavored. Find one that works. If you can g e t a smoothie down, you can get liquids in. If you can't, you need to have your surgeon check you out.

It gets better.

Hi everybody, I am 1 week post-op and new to this site. Food is smelling good to me, but have to wait another week. I am drinking my 3 protein shakes and a total of 64 oz. of flavored water.

I'm at 6 weeks, too. It's a real process figuring out what you can eat, for sure. Have you talked to your surgeon? Have you tried reverting to protein drinks and water to help catch up on hydration? I'm sorry you're having a rough go. Please know that just because a food doesn't work for you now doesn't mean it won't work in the future. I hope things get better for you very, very soon.

Thank you! Yes, I have spoke to my surgeon and dietitian. They tell me to stay on liquids as long as possible. I do drink the premier protein drinks. Banana is my favorite but I have been doing that for two months and they are starting to get to me also. Water is a struggle but I have been forcing myself. I have tried every different flavoring out there to help but none of them tastes good to me.

My dietitian mentioned not to drink from a straw. Have you heard this? I haven't been but started yesterday, as it seems to help me drink more and to me that is my number one goal but wasn't sure if the straw thing was that important.

Many programs tell people not to drink through straws because, apparently, straws make people inhale air. But this is not true and some people have better luck drinking with a straw than without one. So if straws help you, use them.

Banana premier protein was my fave, too?but I burned out on those and only keep around if I can?t make a shake in the blender. I am really liking Isopure vanilla (on amazon)made with fairlife skim milk lately?38g of protein in one shot. I add Pb2 or a strawberry tongive it some variety.

Yes, my program says no straws, because it could introduce gas into your sleeve. Buuut, one day by the pool I used a straw to drink some ice water and guess what: It was easier to drink and I felt no extra gas at all. I think it actually helped me take smaller, more consistent sips. If I sucked down to the bottom and tried to sip an empty cup, I?m sure it would cause gas?but normal drinking? No prob. I say try it and see if it works. You?ll know right away if it does or not.
