just wanted to give an update. Had my surgery on the 19th . First day was very challenging. Lots of nausea , discomfort etc. I feel like I have been gradually getting better . I am having so much trouble drinking the expected 64 oz . Started protein shakes today and was only able to take 8 oz.

i have a question. Does feeling full after surgery change? I feel almost like a pain in the middle of my chest when I drink too fast or too much

also have noticed that one of the incision site seems swollen and tender to touch . Seems like this is normal.

Anyway I just hope things would get better as days pass

It's likely that the pain in your chest you're feeling now is due to swelling from surgery. You might have more comfort sipping through a straw if you're not already.

Keep an eye on the incision site for signs of infection.

Make sure to get your liquids in - some people have better luck with different temperatures or different fluids. Hot tea, warm broth, luke warm crystal light. Experiment until you find something you can tolerate.

Thanks . Will try some broth. My doctor told me not to use a straw because I can get unnecessary air in. I have my post op today

Yes, a number of plans say "no straws because air" but, in actuality, some people have an easier time with straws and find that they take in more air without straws, leading to discomfort. It's one of those topics that plans try to force a one size fits all solution on, when there isn't one.

I had trouble drinking enough the first few days out of hospital, because my abdomen felt so bloated and "full". I found having SF freezies were a big help- I found it much easier to crunch/suck one down, than say a glass of water.

Take it slow, it's normal to feel discomfort etc. Walk around for several minutes several times a day to get the gas moving, but otherwise don't be afraid to get lots of rest and take painkillers as you need them. it gets better.

That discomfort you feel is likely the restrictive part of your VSG working, however things will be a little tighter than normal due to swelling. I still get that feeling at almost 9 mnths out, of course to a much lesser degree.

On the drinking portion, just keep plugging away. Take a sip every 5 minutes. I used medicine cups and my cellphone stop watch to keep me on task. Do water then do your protein shakes this way. Unfortunately drinking is going to be a full time job. It will get better!

In my immediate post-op period, if I took too big of a gulp of water, I got a "stuck" feeling that felt a bit painful. It was due to swelling. I had a hiatal hernia repair, so I think my esophagus was just extra restricted at that time. One thing that helped if I made the mistake of a big sip: I lifted my arms, touch-down style. This helped open everything up a bit and seemed to let the water drain down into my sleeve a bit better.

So, yes, I think your full feeling will change and the pain will go away.

That all said, mention it to your doctor. Especially regarding your incisions. They may want to take a look. An infection is way easier to deal with if you catch it quickly.
