Topic: RE: VSG long term...ers
Hi there, I am not a long long timer but almost 15 months out and my only regret is that I didn't do it years ago.

Yes there are some adjustments to be made - the pre wls liquid isn't fun, and I do remember immediate post wls looking at a protein shake and wondering just how I was going to be able to drink it all, and of course it takes a while to learn just how much food you can eat before you eat too much and get sick, but really it is the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Good luck

Topic: RE: How long before Ghrelin....
Hi there, question - any heartburn?  Shortly after my wls I started to feel hungry but also had a lot of heartburn.  I got meds for it and a year later I have found that the days I miss the meds hunger is much more of an issue.  On meds I only get hungry if I haven't eaten in 3 or 4 hours, without the meds - its as if I didn't have the surgery I am hungry all day.

I also recall reading other postings over the last year or so about people mistaking gas for hunger.  Talk to your dr.

Good luck

Topic: RE: Okay....I'm having days where I get soo flippen hungry!!!
Hi there - I am going to ditto Maureen's message.  One day I wasn't just hungry I was starving, which made keeping to the program almost impossible - I hadn't gained any weight but I wasn't losing anything either.

I had ran out of my anti-reflux meds while I was out of the country but I didn't get any hearburn so I figured that I didn't need them anymore and  didn't renew my pres.  It was about 2 weeks later  that the hunger hit.   It  took me about a month before it even crossed my mind that what I was feeling might be gas, I tried the Pepcid and that didn't help, so out of desperation I got the pres renewed and very quickly the "starving" feeling started to become bearable.  It took about 10 days but the hunger pangs went away, they haven't come back and my weight loss has started again.

So the lesson is - just because you don't have heartburn doesn't mean that you don't have gas - who knew!!

Topic: RE: Worst 3 weeks of my life and still can't get in to Dr. V.

My sympathies for your loss and the neglect that led to your mothers  death.  Having lost my mother and sister  I know that there is nothing that can be said to make you feel better right now, its all just too painful to process, but just know that there are wonderful people on this forum with a wealth of experience and a willingness to share that experience or just listen.

Right now, be kind to yourself and as hard as it is, please try and take care of yourself, your mother would never have wanted your health to suffer because of what happened to her.

My prayers go out to you and your family.

Topic: RE: OT: I dont get men.

Amen to Quillie's post - sounds like "he's just not that into you" and will add - he's just into using you.

Now I am an old (50) married broad, and I have been out of that "scene" for a long time, but some things don't change - so unless you're only interest in him is his availability for a booty call pass on the "oral" , if  its the booty call - have fun.

If its more than a booty call - then look around at the relationships of your  friends, family, acquaintences etc and ask yourself -have you ever ever heard of a serious relationship that started with "oral":

Don't let him play you -  911 men don't usually lack confidence, his saying that he  feels you're too good for him  sounds like manipulation to me.

You're beautiful and you're smart and worth so much more than just giving some guy "oral" on his terms.

Topic: RE: Has anyone ever done a Zumba class?

Hi there, love Zumba, do it at least once a week.  Not all instructors are created equal, but you will hardly even notice that your are working out.    Because it is a more dance type class you might feel a little uncoordinated at first but you'll soon see that you're not the only one learning the moves, and a side benefit is that you learn some latin moves - very nice

Its very easy to modify, the instructor will show options - at the start just use the low impact ones at first and then as you get stronger you just make less and less adjustments.

Have fun

Topic: RE: Who did the couch to 5k?

I started it and was doing quite well - was pretty close to being able to run 30 minutes straight which was absolutely mind blowing for me.  Unfortunately, I had to stop when I was told I had arthritis in my knees.

Have you checked out the exercise forum - lots of great advice and info from those folks.

Good luck and happy running

Topic: RE: What do you tell people when they notice you don't eat much?

Hi there, I didn't tell most people that I had wls and at the beginning people were much more pushy about trying to get me to eat. It would depend on what the meal was (b/fast, lunch or dinner) but either way I would just use the excuse that I had a large or late meal before or that I was going out again for the next one.

It got easier after I had lost about 50 lbs and people started to notice the lbs gone.  Friends noticed the weight loss and stopped questioning and pushing, frenemies noticed the weight loss and pushed even harder.   Some asked why I was not eating the salad and I would just tell them that I always eat salads so want to try something different.  You will be surprised how many people don't even notice what you are eating.

Enjoy

Topic: RE: No more Sleep Apnea post VSG/WL?
Hi there

I have always slept poorly, even as a normal weight child and young adult, so didn't recognize that I had developed sleep apnea, in fact I wasn't diagnosed until just a couple of weeks prior to my wls.  I was very upset (probably unreasonably so) and and although I shouldn't say it I absolutely hated the machine and was totally non-compliant with wearing it once I had my wls.

Thankfully, I had a retest last week and the technician said that I didn't even snore so its gone, I just have to get it confirmed by the dr.

There is a forum for sleep apnea you should give it a visit.

Good luck

Topic: RE: Excess Skin?
Hopefully you will have age on your side, the first time I lost 100+ lbs I was 30 and had almost no loose skin, I did get the girls uplifted but that was purely vanity.   This time, I am 50 years old and will absolutely have to have plastics - lots of loose skin already.

Good luck and be glad that you are taking care of yourself while you are still young enough that your body will probably bounce back.

Girl sometimes you just have to do what you have to do - if thats how you needed to spend the weekend then your body needed to rest and rejuvenate.

Thanks all, the sleeve is just an amazing gift.    I ate sensibly but enjoyed myself - all within reason of course, even had a good time at the buffets on the ship - ate a spoonfull of what looked absolutely delicious and didn't even get sick once.  Also have to say that I was able to walk for hours, which probably contributed to the weight loss, and barely felt it.  I tried to eat like some of my "normal" sized friends and it worked.

My husband wasn't happy about the wls in the first place, but had no choice to accept it - now he diets and exercises with me, tells me that he doesn't want to be fat and old when I am skinny and sexy, so maybe thats whats going on with your dh.

Topic: RE: Mediterranean cruise + weight loss = WOW
Hello all

Well I just had to report that I returned last night from a 10 day vacation that included 3 days in Rome and a 7 day Mediterrean cruise that was just awesome, but to make it absolutely perfect, not only did I not gain weight but I actually lost 2.5 lbs - could it get any better.

When I left I had been stuck on a plateau for almost a month, so I just decided to go and have a good time, to eat reasonably but enjoy myself, so I ate pasta (how can u not in Italy), enjoyed half of a kids size gellato every day and even had a glass of wine with dinner and still lost weight .

I also accomplished 2 of my goals - I didn't need a seat extension and the best I could tell I was not even once the fattest person in the room

I LOVE MY SLEEVE

Topic: RE: Gym and Personal Trainer questions??
Hi Misseye

Might I suggest a women's only gym.   My gym has many different locations that I can visit, some coed and some women's only, and I can really tell the difference in the atmosphere in the women's only facilities - they are there to exercise and only exercise, so almost no lulemon outfits etc.   How busy they are will depend on the time of day you go.

Showers and dressing rooms depend on the facility, take a look around and pick the one that best suits your needs.  I have been going to a gym since week 5 post wls and really enjoy it, especially when I do a class that I wouldnt even have got through the warm up before.  I also love the zumba and dancing type classes, hardly feels like a workout.

p.s. - congrats on the tremendous weight loss, and without exercise - wow

Topic: RE: 2 week liquid fast - need tips
Hi there, my sympathies, I think that for many of us those 2 weeks of liquid diet are the worst part of the whole process, and frankly the only way I got through it was one day at a time.  You have to just grit your teeth and just remember that it is only 2 weeks and the rewards are for the rest of your life.

Hang in there and if you have a slip get back on track the next "meal".

Topic: RE: Stall at 6 months
Judging by the # of posts I have read about stalling around the 6 month mark this seems to be a pretty common complaint and just another of the stages we have to go through.  I am just shy of the 6 month wls mark, but if you include the pre-op diet right at 6 months, and have been stalled for 5 weeks, at first I thought it was jus****er retention after coming off of hbp meds and diuretics last month, but I am starting to think that even with the water retention I should have lost a lb or two of fat.

I have hired a personal trainer for when I get back from vacation to shake up my exercise routine and if that doesn't work I will do the 5 day pouch test.

Good luck - hope it breaks soon for you.

Topic: RE: Diuretics and stalls
Hi all

For the month of July I lost nothing - in fact overall I ended up with a gain of 7 lbs.   I am not  happy about this but I am not panicking (yet) because I had actually lost 5 lbs for July, then my dr. took me of my hbp meds and diuretic and boom within a couple of days I was up 7 lbs and so I have now come to a stall.

Other than the diuretic I haven't changed anything in my die****er intake or exercise, and I am tracking what I eat, so I am pretty sure that the 7 lbs are water.   Initially I tried reducing the amt of water I drink but stopped that when I got on the scales and I was up 10 lbs, so I went back to my usual 8 - 10 cups a day, a few lbs dropped off but it still sits at 7 lbs.

Funny though while I gained 7lbs I did manage to lose some inches - go figure.

So questions - how long does the effect of stopping a diuretic last?  and how long was your longest stall?

Hi there, can't help you there 'cause I live in Canada and we have different stores, just wanted to commiserate with you.   After 2 people told me that I needed some "pick-up" I have spent hours looking for bras that fit properly and don't cost a fortune, doesn't help that for now at least I am an unusual bra size - very frustrating.

I get a runny nose when full, sneeze when over full but not to vomiting point- unfortunately, I don't get either until I have stopped eating, so not so usefull.

OMG - I have had this problem for years and knew it was related to over eating but I never heard about it before and thought it was just one of my "weirds"
