Topic: RE: Tri - Surgiversery

When replying to Deb’s two year surgiversery post. I looked at my signature and realized that today is my three year surgiversery.

I agree time does sure fly.

So let’s recap I started my journey on 12/10/2009 when I first visited my Surgeon. I weighed in at a whopping 357 pounds. On the day of surgery 3/3/2010, I weighed 309. Today I weighed in at 205.1.

I reached goal at 7 months at 220 pounds. Although my body didn’t stop. I went as low as 188 pounds.

For those that followed my progress. You know that I struggled with my goal weight for a long time. I was never one to believe in the Normal BMI range. When I got to 188 I was disgusted with how I looked. I would have to lose another 15 pounds to get to the top of the normal range. I got comments from friends and family but I ignored them but I truly didn’t like the way I looked. So I decided to stay in the 195 to 200 Range. Therefore I lost a total of 169 but put back on 17 pounds on purpose for a total loss of a 157 pounds.

I then had Plastic Surgery in December of 2011 (LBL) and June of 2012 (Gynecomastia). Basically I now have a new body. I still have flabby thighs but I can live with it. I adjusted my target range between 200 and 205. I now look in the mirror and can honestly say I love what I see. Most importantly…I love myself.

I lead an active lifestyle. I work hard and play hard at the same time. I’m trying to maintain a good work life balance.

To give an example two weeks ago I went Camping with my son in sub degree cold weather. Yesterday I took my son and daughter skiing. Next week I’m off to Minnesota for work for several days.

The activities I am now able to do with my kids are priceless. They create long term memories that they will never forget. I would never have been able to do them at 350+ pounds. I've been in support group meetings where people have said that they missed their children childhoods. I'm glad that I made this decision before loosing the ability to profoundly impact my kids childhoods..

I don’t post much anymore. But I do visit every day to update my weight in the tracker. And pretty much just briefly lurk.

I never weigh my food. I stopped tracking as I pretty much eat the same foods all the time. So I know what’s safe and what’s not and how those foods affect my body. I never eat till I’m full. Don’t like throwing up so not going there. I do weigh myself daily. I don’t stress…I adjust. Once in a blue moon I’ll take a break. To get out of my rut. But I’ll hop back on the bandwagon if my clothes feel tight. I know that if I don’t stay vigilant I will fall back in my old ways…ain’t going to happen…Been through too much to go there.

Bottom line...If you develop good habits early on...Maintainance becomes a breeze and you know how to work your tool.

Since I forgot about my surgiversery I didn’t make an annual appointment with my surgeon. I have to do that as I have questions. My only complaints are that when I laugh really hard I get spasms in my intestines. If I eat or drink an hour before going to bed I wake up out of my sleep choking. I posted about that earlier and was told it may be GERD.

Other than that…even though the honeymoon is over…I still love my Sleeve!!!

I noticed the hair loss at 2 months out. It wasn't that bad. I was concerned that it was due to my age instead of the surgery. But my hair started to grow again by 6 months it was back to normal.

I did the extra protein and biotin thing. But not sure if that helped or not.

Didn't have to wear a binder. He told me to get Under Armour compression shirts/shorts.

Wasn't annoying at all. It feels like a security blanket so that things aren't moving around that much. Think it definitely helped. It was hard giving it up.

My surgeon didn't have me start on compression garments until 3 weeks after surgery. Then I had to wear them for 3 weeks 24/7.

Topic: RE: Blood pressure issues
I've always had High blood pressure and still do. It's controlled by meds. I had the discussion with my Dr. I said to him that I'm surprised that I dropped 160 pounds and still have High Blood pressure. His reply to me was "Plenty of skinny people have High Blood pressure" In my case it's related to genetics.

That aside I have heard of people who have had serious heart issues still having the VSG. I've seen posts where the cardiologist will clear the surgery if the Anesthesiologist is a specialist in cardiac issues. Maybe you should discuss that with your cardiologist to see if thats an option. As loosing the weight will definitely help in the long run.

AS some of the other poster said this is your decision. But I for one have been in your shoes and have had the same doubts that you had. It's a scary decision but I had to look at my life my successes and failures with battling my weight. The failures far out weighed the successes. As Diane mentioned feel free to read my Blog.

Having the sleeve has been one of the best decisions I've made. I've been able to keep the weight off and for the first time in my life I feel that I can win the battle.

Good luck!!!

Topic: RE: Abnormal EKG...can you relate?
My EKG always shows abnormal. What the cardiologist told me that when he looked at my EKG it shows that I just suffered a heart attack. He then went on to say that an EKG by itself does not show a complete picture. You need to have and EKG, Echo and stress test. When I did them he said that I was fine.

Topic: RE: This is going to bum you out, sorry.

Elina I read your post and I had to sit back and think how what you wrote applied to me. I'm a numbers guy and I like to crunch them but at the same time i don't put a lot of weight into stats and lab studies. I believe everything is individualized to the person and how they live their life.

I recently had my two year visit with my doctor. He told me about the stats and that how a majority of people regain at least 10 to 20% of their weight. I also looked at some of the people in my support group and I can see that correlate to reality. I had lunch with one person today and she had her sleeve a week after mine. She was upset because she gained back 20 pounds.

I'm determined that this wont happen to me If I were to utilize your categories I would say I fall into #2. I'm a daily weigher and that what keeps me motivated. I do indulge on rare occasions but I have to be at the low end of my range to do so. The daily weigh ins help me keep on track. If I go above my range I go back to my weight loss phase and go back to 800 calories with few to no carbs.

I definitely miss the weight loss phase as it was exciting to step on the scale and see dramatic results. In additions the NSV's were a huge motivational factor. Now new ones are non existent and the scale barely moves in the negative direction.

I still have good restriction. But like you I know ways of eating around the sleeve. I get full fast but if I eat non dense protein type food. I could graze all day.

I try to exercise but I don't do it consistently. I'm definitely more active and I try do do things like Walk to the Dry Cleaners, Store, Post Office, etc Vs. Jumping in my car to go a couple of blocks. I think this all adds up and helps to increase my exercise level. I too utilize the Fitbit it's a great tool and helps me to make sure I keep moving.

I'm still at the point where I don't get hungry but to tell you the truth physical hunger was never my issue. It was and will always be the cravings. I get cravings all the time. It's difficult to resist. Drinking Water or Diet Ice Tea helps and when that doesn't work, I snack on high protein foods like Cheese or Beef Jerkey. My trigger foods are carbs and sweets. Once I start it's like a snowball rolling down hill. When I get on the scale and see the results it's usually enough to get me back in gear.

I think maintenance is definitely the hardest part of the journey mostly because it's the longest part of the journey. I don't think I'll ever be in a place that some try to get to where they think that their tool will be on auto pilot and they can maintain with little to no effort. It's a constant vigilant effort and I'm determined to never go back to where I was. I definitely agree that the sleeve is a tool. We have to use it to our advantage.

Topic: RE: Weight Loss Plateau
This handout was in my docotors office when I went for my annual checkup. I thought it was interesting so I re typed it. Thought I would share:

Weight Loss Plateau

How a Weight Loss Plateau occurs & how to reduce its effects

A weight loss plateau occurs because the difference between energy intake and energy expenditure gradually balances. The human body must restore energy balance to survive, imagine the consequences if a human kept losing weight because he/she couldn’t find enough food! Our body has physiological mechanisms in place which help maintain energy balance relatively quickly

The Process of a Weight Loss Plateau

When someone begins a new diet and cuts calorie intake it does develop what is needed to lose weight, a negative energy balance, less energy consumed than the body requires. It then needs to start using up energy stores to make up for this calorie deficit. However very often the body has adapted to suit a regular lifestyle and the energy system is unconditioned for any change thus cells continue to use carbohydrates and protein to supply the majority of energy, stored fat is used but this often makes up a small percentage.

Metabolic Rate Decline

As protein and carbohydrates are used from the cells it causes a reduction in the amount of lean mass forcing the metabolism to decrease, this means the individual now requires less energy to maintain the new weight. In other words, the body has gradually adapted to match the new energy intake!

We Burn Less Calories

There is a second effect, as the body becomes progressively lighter less calories are burned during movements so overall energy expenditure also reduces.

The reduction in lean mass and the lowered energy expenditure both help restore a balance of energy from any initial reduction in calorie intake and can even slow progress from the extra exercise sessions often undertaken when attempting to lose weight.

The bottom line is the initial calorie per day reduction no longer continues to be effective for losing further weight as the body no longer recognizes that there is a calorie deficit. There will always be an adaption to match any lower calorie intake simply because the body needs to conserve energy for survival!

CALCULATE TARGET HEART ZONE

To perform aerobics effectively you need to calculate your target heart zone. To do this subtract your age from 220 to find your maximum heart rate, so if a person is 30 years old then:

                Maximum heart rate… 220 – 30 = 190 beats per minute

Then multiply your maximum heart rate by 65%

                190 x 65% = 123.5 beats per minute

123 beats per minute will be the lower range if the zone. Now work out your range by multiplying your maximum heart rate by 85%

                190 x 85% = 161.5 beats per minute

The example reveals a target heart rate of 123 – 161. When exercising the heart rate should be within your own range at all times and to burn more fat you should exercise within the lower range. Exercising at the lower range enables the body to take up enough oxygen so the cells can utilize stored fat. If you workout within the higher range if the zone but you will burn more calories however most will be in the form of carbohydrates and less total fat.

You can check your heart rate while exercising by gently placing your index and middle finger on the inner part of your wrist. Now count how many beats within 15 seconds and times the number by 4. However, I would recommend using an automatic heart rate monitor so you can concentrate more on exercising.

If you are just starting out use 50 – 60 % of your maximum heart rate.
