So my GF wants me to go to a counselor to try & find out why i over eat yada yada. I cant say that i dont complete agree. I do actually. I just dont know where to start or what kind of counselor to see.
I understand that food for me is an addiction. But i think i want to know why that is - something from my childhood - a learned behavior ("eat everything on your plate! kids in china are starving" type of thing) or something more.

So i thought i would reach out here & see if any of you have had counseling on this. What type of counseling did you have? a food addiction counselor who specializes in eating disorders? or some other kind?

I'd appreciate your input & guidance.
    Thanks,
    Candace

    Hi Miss Candace,
I definitely have a food addiction and attend Overeaters Anonymous meetings and have for years. It's a spiritual program the same as AA utilizing the steps and tools. I notice your signature about the Will of God. I definitely suggest trying this wonderful program. It's much cheaper than Counselors, and in fact, MANY Counselors refer their clients to OA.

If I was to try and find a counselor, I'd find one for food or substance abuse..Locally we have a FA (Food Addicts) group that meets at the local Kaiser Hospital. My veternarian (who is also a WLS patient!) told me about it after we had talked about the stress and things..

It would definitely center on eating disorders for me..See if you can find such a group or counselor..perhaps if you contact your surgeon, he could point you in the right direction..Or your PCP if you can talk to them..
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Thank you both for your input. These are both good ideas.
My initial thought about OA was that it sounded like something straight out of an 80's movie. Then i felt embarrassed/ashamed at the thought of telling my friends/fam that im going to OA. Nonetheless, i think that is a very good option that may provide some valuable insight.
After all, i do agree that my overeating is the result of an addiction to food. & I think I need to understand why i feel i NEED that & cant "control" that.
So, thanks again for the tips - i will definitely follow up on them.
