Why not Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?  Does your surgeon offer it yet?  It has worked out really well for my husband.

My husband had this same problem.  It eventually got better.  But it was a lot of work to just keep sipping and sipping.  Keep going, I think he got pretty sick at one point because of being dehydrated.  He eventually was able to drink enough without  a problem.

    Topic: IM BACK FROM SURGERY

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted you all to know that I'm back from Utica and the operation was a success. Dr Graber and Fitzer were awesome so was there team. I couldn't of asked for better care. We stayed at the Scottish Inns and the service was top notch. The minute we got there we received a mini fridge, microwave to accomodate us in our room. The rooms were clean and it was a very quiet place, that made my recovery even better. What really impressed me was that it was a non-smoking motel and that the service was excellent. Anything we wanted we got plus the management was friendly.

Now most of  you know that Mireille R was my Angel. Well let me tell you she has a real life saver and great help to me. Unfortunately, there was a mix up ''my fault'' and poor Mireille was not able to reach me in Utica. For this I appaulagise and want everyone to know that she did made the effort to try and contact me but are wires got crossed. I had also forgot my phone book at home with her number in it, so that did not help matters.

Anyways. I 'm glad to say that I am back and it was a great experience!

While in Utica ''hospital'' I have met 3 great people that made it even easier for me to go through this surgery and god bless them all. I have given them our website addy and that will be joining us. So please welcome  Joshua, Carson and Sharon!!

    Sincerely

    Shirley xox

Hi The Golean Kashi  Cereal is good and it has 13 grams of protein and when you add skim milk that is a total of about 20 grams of protein.

Why would someone be comfortable with your skin when you aren't even comfortable in your own skin?  I don't know about you, but I am 52 and I learned along time ago that having a sexual intimate encounter with someone does not mean that they suddenly will want to spend the rest of their life with you. If you are seeking a serious relationship for possible long term commitment, like someone to be with you for the rest of your remaining years ... it only makes sense to take the necessary time to first learn to get comfortable in your own skin. Two don't rush the intimacy, be honest, let him love the person you are on the inside. The right guy, skin wont matter, if it does, he is not the right guy. It is better to find that out before you stress yourself over intimacy. It is just skin!

Well I had my WLS 7 years ago and really haven't had a problem with this issue.  I have lost 218 lbs and definately have my share of skin... ugh!  Anyway, the guys I have dated really haven't had an issue with it.  I usually told them about my WLS after a few dates and I'm sure they expected it (if they made it to that point.... lol!).  Anyway, I really hope you don't let that sway your decision!  I am now 47 years old and engaged for the first time, very happy and this hasn't been an issue at all!!!!!  The only way to get rid of it is with plastic surgery that I know of...

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck!

I lost 15 pounds in three weeks of pre-op liquid dieting.  I was supposed to consume 80+ grams of protein drinks each day, and could have five small servings of other foods, specifically green vegetables, SF jello, and SF FF pudding.

This reduces the size of your liver to make it easier on the surgeon and your safety.

I am so afraid of this happening!  I am also 49 and my surgery date is 8/18/09.  This is one of my biggest worries...what to do about the loose skin!  I'm almost ready to choose the lap band instead, because that might decrease the loose skin (I hope).

Is this loose skin just a given, or can we do anything to make it not happen!?

I had the Lapband in 12/07 and have had nothing but problems with it.   I am in the process of having a revision done.  Which is to remove the Lap-Band and do a RNY.  I would not recommend the Lap-Band for anybody.

I am 3 weeks out and have the same problem.  To ge****er in me, I mix my protein shakes with water instead of milk.  It makes the water thicker and easier to sit in my stomach.  I also found that SF popcicles seem to help wet my mouth.

hi there.  i can't really help you with this question as i am pre-op.  but this is a very quiet board.  the RNY message board is extremely active and since you are RNY post-op, i bet you would get a lot of great responses if you posted this same question over there.  It's under forums > surgical forums > Roux En Y (RNY).

anyway hope you get the info you need one way or the other!

    Topic: Trouble drinking???

Hello everyone.  I am new to this forum.  I had my RNY done on April 20th.  I am down 35 pounds so far.  I am able to eat about an ounce and half at meal time.  My big problem is getting my water down.  If I try to drink fast it feels like it is going to come back up.  I try doing the sip, sip, sip thing but don't get enough in through out the day.  I have tried different things such as just plain water, crystal light, and ice tea.  Has anyone else had this trouble?

Thanks for any help that I can get.

I"ve had the high protein oatmeal and it is ok.  They say no cereal because it is low protein and all carbs.  If you find a protein cereal you like, go for it.

    Valerie,
I exactly what you mean about picking up the phone. I work the night shift(7p-7a) and I was on the computer one night and went to Barix web site and just filled out the on line questionnaire. They called me and made all the arrangements for me, I just had to show up.

As far as my choice, I did go to an information consultation (about 10 People), back in May 2008. After listening to Dr Boe and a few of the others who were there after a lap band had failed them and now they were there to receive the gastric bypass, I thought why waste the time and money on something that could fail. I do work with a women who I told I was going for the surgery and she said "You know I had the Lap band" which I didn't. She said she was smaller than when she started, but she was no pleased with the results. I think you have to be very careful what you eat with the band. And I know I am not careful or I would'nt need this surgery in the first place. Check with other people for their reasons they choose one over the other. Take Care Pat K.

i don't know what kind of aetna i have though since it is my dad's insurance. i will try to ask around & figure it out though. one doctor's office has actually contacted me & said they could fax over paperwork to fill out to see if i would be covered before i go into a consultation. i definitely need to do that & soon to get the ball rolling. i just have trouble picking up the phone.

just out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, did you go for gastric or lap band? & what made you decide one over the other. i have a long way to go, but i'm still debating between the two....
thank you for the response though. & good luck!

    Hi Valerie,
I also had Aetna for a while. The first type would not pay for any out of network surgery (so I was out for a whole year) The next year I took the high Option Aetna and they wanted me to go to a hospital in center city Philadelphia, after a 6 month diet. I was able to switch my plan to Keystone HMO (a blue cross plan) and I was approved right away and I am having surgery next Monday. It seems that any blue cross plan is eager to pay for the surgery, so if you have a choice in NJ, stick to blue cross. As far as your weight goes, as long as you are greater than 40 BMI, you don't need any comorbities to qualify.

what i'd do is... take your time and get to know the guy first (not saying you wouldn't, but there have been plenty of times in my life i myself haven't!)... and then prep him a little what to expect.

i have had a health condition i always have to explain, so i've been through this a lot over the years, just not with loose skin.  and some guys haven't minded so much and some took the first bus out.  my now-husband minded the least LOL.  so hang in there... it just depends on the guy!

    Their ages are (my stepson

Hi Robyn... I am Robin and I had surgery in 2004.  I am currently 43.  I would offer this suggestion to any mature women having this surgery... #1 -Make the most of your first year... It is the optimal time for building good habits and losing the bulk of your excess weight.  #2 -Read ALL the material you are given on exercise and nutrition and follow it!  #3 - Do not go off the program you are given... it is much easier to remain on program than to fall off and get back on.  #4 - Men lose faster so NEVER compare yourself to how a man in the program is doing!

On a personal level, I would do it again in a heartbeat.  It was a very good decision for ME.  Work with your support staff (surgeon, nutritionist, phyciatrist) to determine if its the best decision for YOU.

I wish you ALL the best with your upcoming surgeries.

Welcome, first I would do research on both of the surgeries that you are looking into, nobody can make that choice for you and research is the best way to see which would be the best surgery for you as well as when you talk to the dr.  Do the pros and cons of each and decide based on the information that you have.  I started about a year ago myself.

How do you get over the fear of letting a new guy see the loose skin?                     I look good in my clothes but pretty flabby without?                     I am 49 and seriously do not know if I can get over this hurdle , I hate the idea of being alone for the rest of my life but I don1t think I am strong enough to do the nasty with someone new.

please tell me how any of you have gotten past the fear of being with someone new and the loose skin?    Also I have always been self conscious even years ago when I was thin.

I look like an 80 year old woman nekkid!!!

Topic: RE: Less Than 4 Weeks to RNY Surgery
Ok...here's my take on things.  I was so proud of myself for making this healthful decision, I told anyone and everyone.  That's just me.

When people start to notice the weight loss, tell them, "I've adopted a new lifestyle, and I'm working hard to get healthier."  Then, thank them for noticing!  :)  They really don't need to know anything more.  If they ask...well, how did you lose the weight, you can tell them, honestly...."Diet and exercise."

I wish you all the best!  I'm 7 weeks out, and I know that this was the best...the BEST...decision with the exception of having my kids

This is definitely NOT the easy way out.  I remember at my first appt. with my surgeon, I said...I feel like I'm taking the easy way out."  I was thinking to myself...the weight will literally just fall off of me.  I was thinking...no meetings.  no getting on a scale in front of people.  This is too easy.  It's not!  You have a lot of psychological changes to make!  Old habits die hard!

Anyway...Congratulations on your decision to improve your quality of life, and your health!
I'm becoming half the person I was...but I'm also becoming twice the woman!

i am giving this question a lot of thought.  i'm trying to qualify for RNY.  for the record i'm still in the approval stage, so it's by no means a given i'll be able to have the surgery.  but should everything work out, i'll have to take off at least 2 weeks from work probably, plus assuming i'm successful there will be noticable changes quickly and i'm sure someones are going to ask what i'm doing differently.

my boss will know i'm  having surgery and he wont' want details, except to say something like "i hope it's nothing serious."  I'll say something like, "well it's necessary, but it's not heart surgery" and he'll probably just nod and approve my time off.

my coworkers are all 20-something males and i don't want them to know, period.  so if they ask, i'll just say i'm getting a medical issue treated successfully.  no details.  but i dunno.  sometimes it's just easier to tell the truth.  i'd be matter of fact.  i had X procedure done.  end of story.

that's what i'm figuring right now.  but i'd love to hear how others handled it.  friends - i don't have any close friends, really, just my husband.   acqaintances, family outside of immediate - i don't know for sure.  probably i'll tell them the truth and try to keep it short and sweet.

vague but true responses could include, i had a medical issue fixed that was preventing me from losing weight, and i'd rather not get into the details, but it was successful.

    Topic: 1st fill--???'s
Hi, I am almost 4 months post-op(lap-band) and just had my 1st fill (4cc's) went back next day and had1 1/2cc removed.  Just wondering (3 days post fill) I have been able to eat soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, protein shakes, omlett, chicken breast---when I say eat I mean extremely small portions like maybe 3--7 teaspoons then I am full and I eat about 6-7 timesdaily now(chicken was 3 very, very small pieces) and have to stop or littles bits will come back up.  Also before fill was able to take a drink of water no problem now I have to sip at it. Is this normal after fill for what you eat and amount drastically reduced??  Before fill as far as type of food I ate I did not have problems with it going down and staying there was able to eat a wide variety ex--cottage cheese did not bother me now I have to be careful with it .  Thanks for any and all input/ advice

Topic: Less Than 4 Weeks to RNY Surgery
Hi.  A good friend recommended this site.  She is a few months out and doing well.  I am scheduled for surgery on May 26, 2009.  My BMI is just about 58 and I have decided to have a filter implanted prior to the procedure as a preventative measure again DVT.  I am anxious to get everything done and over with but at the same time I keep thinking about what my life will be after the procedure.  I have made the decision to tell only those whom I am very comfortable with but I have concerns with how I will reply to others when they start to see the changes.  Can anyone offer advice related to the decision about the filter and how I should respond to those I don't care to share the details with?
