last July i had hernia repair, well I am feeling the same "knot" in the same area and it is sore to the touch and bulging... He put in the mesh and supposedly put it in a large area to stop it from happening again.. but I know I should ask my surgeon, but we are not really talking ( LONG story) and I really do not want to have surgery again!!!! I would rather have my arm cut off instead of having Abdominal surgery again.. I am such a good little girl, I have been wearing my binder just in case to offer a little support... I know no one can diagnosis on postings but has anyone had a hernia come back?

I had 2 repaired when I had my RNY that I didn't even know I had until the EDG.  I certainly don't have any signs that mine have come back but I think they can.  Mine was lap and very easy, for me at least.

i'm right there with you on no more surgery but am going in on Wed for my knee manipulation which may end up being open.  I hate it so much but I don't really have a functioning knee now and need to have one to be as active as I want to be.  Sometimes we have to put our big girl panties on and do what needs to be done.

Yeah, I got an incisional hernia from my open surgery.  I have heard those were common.  I had it repaired last April.  A few months ago I picked up my boyfriend's 30 lb seven month old grand daughter and I heard it pop.  Back again.  I learned from my surgeon two things.  One, smoking increases the chance of recurrence.  He told me that 80% of patients who smoke will have the hernia come back.  Unfortunately I did start smoking again after my surgery.  I have quit (he wouldn't repair it if I hadn't) and I don't plan on starting again.  Second, once you have had a hernia you are prone to getting them again.  I will always have to watch it when picking up heavy things.  Which is real difficult when you have grand children that are a little chunky.  I forget and sometimes I just don't care.
Anyway, I am scheduled to have it repaired again next Wednesday, if I don't chicken out.  I am not a fan of surgery, either, and I am still trying to decide whether or not I would rather live with the pain, discomfort and risk or have another surgery.

    Hi.

I had emergency surgery while out of state last November for a hernia.  I did not know I had it, but had been having issues for about 9 months relating to it  (long story).  it would hot have too bad if they were able to do it via lap. but he ended up having to cut me open and the recovery was tougher then my RNY.  I would not mess around, it can become serious (stangulated and peforated) and not to scare you but you can die if that happens (my father did).

I have been told by my surgeon that because you have one it does not make your prone to them. you have to remember there are also different types of hernias.

If you are not talking to your surgeon, any general surgeon would be able to repair a hernia.

Good luck on getting it all worked out.

I have an incisional hernia and it is terribly painful but my surgeon doesnt' want to operate on it and I don't want surgery on it.  I had 4 open surgeries last winter for complications and I almost died, so anymore surgery for me is not on the horizon unless absolutely necessary.  I just have to live with the daily pain which isn't easy sometimes.  The problem is that I dont' know if I will know when it becomes an emergency since the pain is so bad eveyday

I had  hernias before gastric bypass and had them repaired they never stayed. One of the reasons for gastric bypass was to help resolve the repeated hernias too. Since suregery I have had to have repeated hernia repairs post op too. They just didn't hold. I did everything that I was told to do. They just didn't take. After the 3rd post op I am praying everyday that it doesn't come back. My surgeon couldn't believe it but it appears the 3rd time has been the charm.
