Post Date: 2/10/12 12:01 pm Yeah, I got an incisional hernia from my open surgery. I have heard those were common. I had it repaired last April. A few months ago I picked up my boyfriend's 30 lb seven month old grand daughter and I heard it pop. Back again. I learned from my surgeon two things. One, smoking increases the chance of recurrence. He told me that 80% of patients who smoke will have the hernia come back. Unfortunately I did start smoking again after my surgery. I have quit (he wouldn't repair it if I hadn't) and I don't plan on starting again. Second, once you have had a hernia you are prone to getting them again. I will always have to watch it when picking up heavy things. Which is real difficult when you have grand children that are a little chunky. I forget and sometimes I just don't care.
Anyway, I am scheduled to have it repaired again next Wednesday, if I don't chicken out. I am not a fan of surgery, either, and I am still trying to decide whether or not I would rather live with the pain, discomfort and risk or have another surgery.
