A friend told me that the lap band surgery works for the super morbidly obese because no matter how high their calorie intake with the Lap-Band, it’s still less than they’re used to having. She said that she ate very healthy, just too much; but the surgery no longer allowed her to eat those healthy foods, like chicken, grains and broccoli, because they were too high in fiber to go down. Instead, she turned to pudding and macaroni, so of course she gained weight.

In my case, I didnt have much success because I coudn't tolerate the band, due to reflux when the band was tightened. Now I am considering the Sleeve.

Her theory sounds very flawed.  I've never heard of high fiber foods not going through the band... but I'm not an expert on it.  I have heard of lots of folks having issues with the band over time.

Congratulations and good luck on pursuing your sleeve!

I had the band in March of 2008.  I lost about 90 lbs and kept all but about 25 off.  I never got to my goal weight.  I couldn't eat broccoli AT ALL, it wouldn't go down!  I struggled with salads, chicken and beef... it just really depended on the day... I was vomiting several times a week.

I converted to the sleeve in November 2014.  So far, I am excited that I can eat broccoli. :) LOL  I can eat chicken and steak.  I have restriction and I can only eat 2-3 oz, but I can eat it.  I don't have much room for veggies, so I'm not eating them right now, but I'm excited to know that when I reach goal and I am moving on adding more food to my diet, I won't be as restricted.  I will be able to actually eat a salad!

I am an extremely slow loser... I don't know if it is because I was already pretty much eating the same diet I am eating now or what, but I am a slow loser. :/  I just keep sticking to plan.

there are so many problems with the band.  I know folks think it is a less surgery and is removable but it is so hard maintenance with fills, etc and other issues.

We all know you can out eat any surgery.  Pudding and macaroni would make anyone gain weight.

Sleeves are great for a lot of folks.  That was what I wanted but insurance wouldn't approve so I ended up with RNY.  I am so happy I did.  I needed the extra restriction and the malabsorption to lose all my weight.

I have not had my surgery yet. Hoping to 3/10 if all goes as planned and insurance approves me. I talked with my surgeon about both the sleeve and the R&Y and decided I want the R&Y because of the malupsorption and the intolerance I hope to sugars. ( that is my weakest link). Basically told the sleeve you pretty much can tolerate any foods just less of them. But, I also read from many of these boards that if you have a history of reflux that the sleeve may not be something you would want. I have heard of those that have had the sleeve revise to the R&Y. I first thought that was what I would want...but have since decided the R&Y is the one for me.

At 6+ years out my RNY still controls my fats and sugar.  Dumping wasn't the most pleasant thing but now I am so thankful for it!!

Good Luck with your surgery!!

I've only really known one close friend who had the band.  I had my RNY the same month she got her band. She threw up all of the time and I only got sick when I over did fats and sugars.  We didn't want to compete so I never asked her why she was throwing up.

We are both over 6 years out. I don't think she ever got down to a normal BMI but she looks great and happy.
