Day 2 Post-Op...

My surgery went great and after 1 night in the hospital I was released to go home. I also had a hernia repair (hernia found during procedure). Over all I'm not in a ton of pain and have only taken the pain med at night since being home.  The only issue I've had is some nausea but they worked to control it each time.

I was told to focus on liquids the most, so that's my plan. How many ounces should I be getting in to avoid dehydration? I was told to shoot for as much as possible, but want to be sure I'm getting enough to avoid complications.

Yay - I've finally made it on the bench!!

My surgeon had me working towards getting 64 oz in.  It never happened, but that was my goal.  I had to keep a chart for him.  I was supposed to drink 1 oz every 15 minutes.  Doing 1 oz every 15 minutes, you would have 64 oz in 16 hours.  I had a water bottle that I sipped on.... I tried to finish the bottle in an allotted amount of time.  Plain water made me nauseous, so I drank crystal light (at room temp) and protein shakes (didn't like them!)  I also had some unjury chicken noodle protein, but I only drank it a couple times.  I really struggled with getting my fluids in.  They said nausea was a sign of dehydration, but also could have been the pain medicine.

Try not to get discouraged, it takes time to get in the swing of things.... at least it did for me.  It wasn't until about week 6 that I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to (getting my liquid, protein and vitamins in everyday).

Work the sleeve and it will work for you!

Congratulations and welcome to the losers bench! :)

I seem to be doing better with room temp stuff too. I'm getting in what I can and constantly sipping but am still just barely over 30 oz. At least there is still time to get in more. I keep getting the bubble feeling at times when I drink which I assume means to slow down.

I'm not at all discouraged...just trying to avoid dehydration! Thank you for the tips and making me feel less stressed at this point if I can't get 64 oz.

We were on the same 1 oz per 15 min plan, lol.  I used tiny medicine cups for the first week.  Even after that, tiny sips were the order of the day.  Room temp or warm worked best.  Never liked plain water but it was what tasted best because everything else had too much flavor.  Soon I could do herb tea.  I got my protein in from the beginning but they did taste too sweet.

Sounds like you are doing great.  Rest, walk, sip, repeat.  It gets better every day.

Thank you! I have gotten in 25 gm of protein today. Still going to try to increase that.

64 oz was also my goal.  And I agree with Price, the little medicine cups were a big help to me.  I kept one near where I was sitting and every 15 min filled it up.  It was relatively easy to drink that much at a time so i didn't feel so pressured.  Also agreed with Elizabeth, it was hard to actually achieve the goal, but as long as you are making daily progress towards getting there, I think it will be good.  Unjury ckn broth was my goto in the beginning. Both liquid & protein at the same time...BONUS!

My surgery twin. I just got home today. Had a bad gallbladder that they hadn't anticipated and took out. Spent an extra day in the hospital because of the pain from the gas. Still bloaty but not as bad. My surgeon told me to shoot for 32 oz of liquid this week. My post op is next week. The nurses sent me home with a couple of the 2 oz medicine cups. They definitely helped while in the hospital.  They suggested I drink one everytime a commercial came on which 8oz in an hour. Water is difficult and the gas and bloating is miserable but so far no nausea and I think the pain is bearable. More sore than anything. I don't want to take the pain medicine if I don't have to since it can slow down what I just got moving. I'm just glad I'm on the losers bench.

My new mantra, sip, sip, sip, walk, walk, walk

Carpe Diem!

My vsg was 4-6-15. I started out drinking the premier protein shakes. They have 30 grams of protein in each 11 oz shake. I have gradually added in other foods, but still have a shake or two each day, easy protein and count as fluids from what I understand. Plus I just like them.
