Pre-surgery liquid diet

I'm 5'4" and currently at 206lbs, my RNY is scheduled for 3/29 (so very far away!!!)   My physician has said that I won't be on the liquid diet prior to my surgery. Friends who have gone through this are all very concerned when I tell them this. Did any of you light weights also "skip" the pre-surgery liquid diet?

I had to do the liquid diet but it is really about how large your liver is.  Maybe you have a healthy liver and that's why you don't need to do.  Did you ask your Doctor why?

My surgeon does not require a liquid diet. We all do what they call a liver reduction diet. It's basic low carb, high protein, moderate to low fat, and 1000 calories per day. It starts 30 days pre-op and you only have to stop eating solids halfway through the day before surgery because of the bowel prep. I chose to do the liver reduction diet for 3 months pre-op and I only lost 9 pounds, but I had to eat more than 1000 cals per day to not lose too much weight. He didn't want me getting too close to 30 bmi before surgery, just in case, BCBS could back out and make me just diet instead of having the surgery.

I would have HATED a liquid diet pre-op.

Since I was a low BMI (32) when I had my lapband I didn't have to do any type of diet leading up to my procedure.  I did have to do a liquid diet for one week leading up to my RNY but my BMI was a little higher at 34.  It's really doctor specific though.

When I asked, I was told it wasn't necessary which I assume was based on my liver size. Before I had my abdominal ultrasound they said "you probably won't" then after the results they just said "you won't need to do the liquid diet".

I'm going to be starting a new job in a new city right after I've had the surgery so I don't want to be wishing the weeks away (I have so many projects that I need to finish here first!) but at the same time the wait is killing me :)

I only had a one week diet, with protein shakes twice a day and one small low calorie meal. It was not difficult. No other prep other than no eating or drinking after midnight the day prior to surgery. From reading on OH, it seems like there is a wide range of preps used by surgeons ranging from several weeks of liquid only plus a bowel prep to no prep at all (except the usual pre-surgery stopping of food/liquid at midnight).  It doesn't seem to affect the outcomes. So feel lucky that your surgeon isn't subjecting you to a pre-op diet!

I have noticed that not every program requires it. Some just require 1000 cal restriction. My surgeon does require the two week liquid protein shake diet. Brutal. Trust me. The first four days were the hardest. I'm not hungry, just emotional.
