So I am pretty much getting the works done, from my thighs up to my neck. I going the trip alone and when I get home I was wondering how self sufficent I will be. Here are some of the big questions I have.

Can I go upstairs??? I dont mean up and down all day, but I do live on the second story of a big victorian house. So on day 14 I plan on taking a taxi home from the airport and tipping the driver to carry my bag upstairs for me, but will I be able to even get up the stairs to my apartment. I think once I get up the stairs once I can just stay up there and not go anywhere for a while.

Can I shower myself? I dont mind doing the good ole sponge bath for a while, but not sure when most who have alot of procedures feel comfortable to  shower themselves. I have the kind of tub/shower that you have to step over the side.(kinda of like what you see in a hotel, not a walkin)

Oh and if I do shower myself will I be able to get back into the garments I am supposed to wear?

I plan stocking up on food before I leave and wondering if I can pour a glass of milk. Yea sounds weird but if I bought half gallons would they be too heavy to lift?

Its hard to even know how much I can and cant do until I do it myself, but I want to have a back up plan if some of these things seem like I wouldnt be able to do it like I am planning. Any other obvious things you might add that you were or were not able to do at two weeks feel free to add.

Thanks
Jennifer

 Jennifer,

You can do this.  There are stairs, about five of them leading to the hotel parking lot.  You'll practice on those and build up so that you can walk the stairs to your house when you get there.  You might need to rest 1/2 way up.

I could take off and put on my garments before leaving Mexico.  Again, practice while Patty is there with you. I always took the bottoms off to poop so I got good at it.

I think the weight limit is five pounds.  The point is not to tax the incision line.  A full gallon of milk is 8 pounds.  Buy quarts the first few weeks.  Buy Purex  laundry sheets so that you don't lift to wash clothes.  Put things at counter level.  By he time I got home I could lift my arms to the first shelf, put on tshirts etc.

Before leaving Mexico I could bend over to pick things up off the floor.

My first shower home I had a friend here with me but she just sat in the other room.  I didn't need her.

Since you have a tub/shower, you will need to figure out how to get in and out safely.  That's what I had in Mexico and before coming home I could easily get in and out.  Practice sitting on the tub edge and putting first one leg, then the other into the tub.  Is there something for you to grab hold of in the shower?  You might want to find a used shower stool or chair.

One more thing.  If you aren't already doing a lot of an strengthening exercises, start immediately.

Lay on the floor.  Hold your legs out straight and keep them still.  Hold your arms still as well.  Now, without using your arms or legs, practice repeatedly going from laying flat to sitting up.  That's what it will be like when you get to the hotel.  You will not have the use of those limbs to propel yourself.  Your ab muscles will most likely be tightened as well, so they will feel like Jillian Michaels just gave you the workout of your life.

Thats what it feels like to get it all done at once.  But it's like childbirth, we can't believe it, then we quickly forget and only revel in how great it is.   :)

Thanks Lee for all the details. I am now more at ease knowing I can do some basic things on my own. Really, really glad about the stairs. And glad to hear that you can reach the first shelf by the second week. And I guess your right that I will get practice getting in and out of the shower while I am in Mexico. I do workout alot, so I am counting on that helping me recover nicely. Now I can worry a little less and just focus on being excited. Wow there is still so much to do, but I cant wait...

Hi Jennifer,
I didn't get out of my garment for bathroom runs.  I did have my daughter stop over for my first shower after I got home.  The next one, I couldn't wait for her, so did up one hook on one side, then one hook on the other, and worked my way up then zipped up both sides.  It was hard getting the ointment and gauze on my backside LBL and the groin stitches.

Move stuff that is on upper shelves, or you'll be climbing a lot.  I had to stretch once to get my cling wrap down, and it stayed on the counter for a few weeks.

I did walk up the 5 or 6 steps from the pavement to get back to the back of the hotel.  At the end of 2 weeks, you'll be amazed at what you can do.  When I got home my little furbaby had all her toys out on the floor, and I left them for about a week, before I picked them all up and put them away.    A grabber would have been very helpful.  By the time I left MTY, I was doing pretty good.  I spent 2.5 hrs in the outdoor shopping mall, that was on Tue, on Sun I was pooped after 45min there.  I went to a party on Sat after I got home on Wed.  I did take a little break and put my head on a shoulder for about 10 min, but went from 530 until after midnight.  I was shot the next day though.

My daughter had to bring in the dogfood and the heavy stuff when we went to Sams.  My 22lb furbaby had to sleep in the crate for 6 weeks, because I couldn't lift him up on the bed.  But, I was able to get in and out of my high waterbed the first night I was home.

You are "WOMAN" you can do whatever you need to do!  Generally, if I went out and did much on one day, I was home in my pjs the next day.  I did change my jury duty which would have been the Monday after I got home on Wed... I still had some bruising on my face and sitting and trying to pay attention if I would have been picked would have been too much.

Yes, you will be able to do it!!  But...if there is someone to come over the first few days that might be safest.  I still was getting lightheaded when I took showers (normally low blood pressure also).  My daughter helped bandage and get my garments back on after I got home.  The trip home was very tiring and caused extra swelling so it was a lil more difficult to get the garments back on.  Plan ahead use frozen lean cuisine etc for meals so your not killing yourself trying to prepare food.  Get your extra protein in for healing before and after!!!  There are surgery vitamins that help with swelling haven't seen them mentioned lately on the boards.  Makemeheal has them but Amazon has them much cheaper.  I have a high bed and had my girls move the treadmill next to the bed.  It was one small step up/down, just enough to maneuver and used the handles to steady myself to get in and out of bed.  It was genius!!    Thanks for the encouragement. I ordered the vitamins you suggested this morning, hopefully I get them soon so I can start them early. I also am going to do alot of staging my house with stuff easily available. I live in a very small studio apartment. So I am planning on  laying out all the clothes, pjs, towels ect that I plan on wearing or using for the first two weeks out on one of my couches. I am also going to do a nice shopping trip just before I leave. I will take advantage of Lean Cuisenes, Protien shakes, protien bars and I love cereal, so thats a easy meal as well. Its gonna sound a little weird, but I am kind of looking forward to getting thru this on my own. Pretty much everyone I have told are overwhelmed at how much I plan on doing. But even though I know this is gonna be really tough, It just going to prove how strong and brave I am. It helps me to be brave because I see all of you guys going thru the same as I plan on doing.

Here's my big suggestion of te day:

Read the sodium count on any prepared foods you purchase.

I have had barely any swelling, at least not that is noticeable.  I am über careful with sodium.  I was at the store this morning and even at eight weeks out, I won't eat anything remotely high in sodium.  I think it majes a huge difference.

Maybe you could cook up some things that you love and freeze in individual meal size.  It took me several weeks to want more than two ounces of protein and a few bites of veggies or fruit.  Sadly, my appetite is back!
