Post Surgery Hints:
on January 27, 2007 10:05 am

1. You may find it more comfortable to sleep in a recliner after surgery.

2. Don’t eat at least one hour before going to bed.

3. Sleeping on your right side may be more comfortable.

4. Eat in a peaceful setting. It helps your digestion.

5. Some days things won’t stay down; it’s o.k. Tomorrow is a new day.

6. The toilet is your friend. You will feel better after you throw up.

7. If a certain food doesn’t work, try it again in a few weeks.

8. Always have something on hand that you know works for you, like soup.

(Some Bariatric physicians say not to eat soups)

9. Burping can be a sign that you are taking in too much air; try breathing through your nose.

10. Always keep your post-op appointments even if you are feeling well.

11. You and your family will worry that you are not getting enough to eat. Remember a “normal” thin person does not eat a lot.

12. You will begin to crave healthier food a few weeks after your surgery.

13. When going out to eat, order an appetizer or a side item or split a meal with someone.

14. Take your measurements before your surgery so that when you hit a plateau (and you will) you can see how far you have come and love yourself through it.

15. Plateaus are normal and they are going to happen. Don’t panic! Your body needs time to adjust.

16. In the beginning, set a timer for 5 minutes after every bite. This makes you eat slowly and gives you time to figure out if you are full.

17. Keep at least one old pair of pants. When you are not losing weight as quickly as you like, putting them on; it really helps.

18. Take a picture every 20 pounds you lose; it will surprise you.

19. Jot down your accomplishments. For instance, today I was able to cross my legs, or sit in a movie theatre seat. See how far you have come and realize all the things that are no longer an issue for you.

20. Always have the next size ready to go in the closet.

21. Every day gets better!

22. Enjoy shopping and get what you like, not just what fits.

23. Forget breakfast, lunch and dinner; eat less more often.

24. Vitamins are your friend; take them forever.

25. Have a sense of humor; learn to laugh at yourself.

26. BE PATIENT. YOU DID NOT GAIN YOUR WEIGHT OVERNIGHT, NOR WILL YOU LOSE IT OVERNIGHT!

I had found this on a site I was surfing though it was cute so I posted.

My Story

I have been over weight since I young or so I believed I was. I know as a young child I was, but then I look at pictures of myself at the age of 12 or more and I was totally normal looking. I believed that because I was not the size of my friends or other kids that I was the fat one. I was 170 before I had my first son at the age of 17 yrs of age and to get to that weight now would be a dream. Then I had 2 more children..boy did I pack on the pounds. I am a diabetic, have kidney disease, a fatty liver, lymphadema of the legs (which hurts so bad), I had cancer last year (05) and its so hard to sleep longer then 4-5 hours due to pain in my lower back, loss of energy, shortness of breath if I walk far or fast. Its time for a change. SO finally my diabetic doctor said the only choice left is to have gastric bypass surgery. He told me all my health issues would disappear. Can you believe it, after 12 yrs of dealing with it, it was to disappear. No more 4 shots a day, no more pills. WOW. So my first step was the seminar I had on October 17,2006 with Dr. Kruger, then my first appointment was October 19,2006 with the doctor himself. After that everything seemed to fall in place. I had meet with my dietician (Alex)as well as have met with the Psych(Ann Harris). Then I have my four group meetings. So far its going good. They already told me my surgery is scheduled for January. I am very excited. I will post more as there will be more to come.

Update: I had my surgery the 20th. It went well. I cant believe how things has happen so fast. From day one to now.I had no pain, I feel it was more of an uncomfortable feeling. The last day of the stay at the hospital I didnt need the pain medicine. Its just a funny feeling in my stomach. I came home and it was about 6pm. I am trying to get my fluids in as much as I can. As of today I am able to drink 8oz of my ICB in an hour. Cool..lol It was funny because I had a popsicle and couldnt finish it. I have been having ICB with a scoop of protein powder and Hood calorie milk, crystal light, water, protein pudding, cream of wheat, tea, jello, cranberry juice, just about everything that was on the meal plan sample.  I was able to get 55 grams of protein yesterday, so not to bad. I just need to concentrate on getting it all in, about my medication the doctor told me to stop taking everything til I go to see the nurse next week including my insulin, unless I need it. I do take my vitamins and take one shot of long lasting insulin 10 units, thats great compared to 4 shots a day and 55 units of long lasting insulin. So I guess I can say I am on my way....Oh ya I went and bought the "Eating Well After Weight loss Surgery" cookbook and the reciepes in there all sound soo yummy, cant wait to try them. Well I will update soon.

Well here I am updating: I am now approx. 5 weeks out. I feel great. I have energy and can walk faster. I walk about 3-4 miles at work. I went to my first support group January 22, 2006. It was soo nice I finally felt accepted somewhere. The ladies and gentleman they were soo friendly. I did get alot of information and got to see how everyone else was dealing with there surgery and what they are able to tolerate.

I am able to eat solid food. I made Asian dumplings from the cook book the nutrionist suggested. If you love chinese this is a little hint of it. They were soo good. I eat veggie burgers and veggie bites ( I love them) I have eggs and cheese, I have fish, sugar-free pudding. I still can't eat mash potatoes or chicken I think it is too dry or just dont settle with me. I do have once in a while turkey  pepperoni, its a little kick to the diet. I have cottage cheese, oatmeal. I basically try things out and see how they settle with me, I do make sure they are worth it though. Such as high in protein and low in fat. I do not notice my weight loss yet but when I try on clothes I can tell a difference. People have noticed the weight loss already which it feels great. Well I will update soon
