Surgeon Testimonial

David R. Martin
Dr. Martin did my band re-do after a slip. He is the most caring doctor I know. I have worked with him and his patients as a nurse and always admired him and was so thrilled when he decided to take on my aftercare. Within 1 week of my consult, he diagnosed a slip and 2 weeks later, took out my old band and rebanded me! He is amazing!

Hi everyone-- I have never posted in a place like this, but I feel it will make my journey easier. I am 39 years old and have my surgery scheduled for Nov 22, 2006....the day aftre my 40th birthday. I have battled obesity all my life. For the last 8 years, I have been about 110 pounds overweight. I am tall, so hiding it was easy, before! Now at 275 pounds, things don;t hide as easy. I am a nurse working with cardiac patients so I want to lose so when I teach them the need for weight loss, it is from experience! I think I will be able to relate to my patients more if I become healthy again. I will post updates to my profile as surgery goes.

Band Slipped >>redo on 3/21/10
on April 2, 2010 4:05 pm
Well...it has been awhile since I posted anything. All was chugging along well and my weight stabilized at 185 pounds. Then I started to have chest pains and acid reflux. At first I just thought it was the food I was eating. Then I figured it was my heart (stress echo revealed my heart was great). Had UGI on 3/11 and was told by anesthsiologist where I work that my band has slipped.

Well....3/21/10....new band placed, old band out and praying for no more problems. I am told I may be prone to more slips at which point the doctor will take out my new band. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays in place.

Hope I can keep the weight off and even start to lose again. Will pay closer attention to my symptoms now.

3 Month Post-Op
on February 16, 2007 7:31 pm
Well...I am a few days shy of 3 months post-op and feeling okay. Very hungry, like I am starving all day. Been snacking on junk and only gained 1-2 pounds back. But I finally get a fill. Hopefully by end of next week, I will have some restriction so I stop eating everythign in sight.

Even though the scale is slow to move now, the inches are coming off. My cvlothes are getting loose and I can fit in some 14's for pants and XL for shirts. No more 2x tops and 20 jeans!

No pain or discomfort and no problme other than my hair loss which I have come to accept.

Will update when I get my next fill.

5 weeks post-op
on December 30, 2006 6:27 pm
Hi everyone--

I have been so busy and have not had time to post due to the holidays and my return to work, but I felt like I needed to update you all.

Today, I am 5 weeks post-op and I am now weighing in at 234 pounds! I have not seen that since I was 4 months preegnant with Joshua who is now 8 years old. I have been feeling alittle down as most of the weight was during the 2 weeks after surgery (which I expected because of liquids).

I started this journey weighing 277 and wearing a tight size 20 jeans and 2x tops, along with 1-2x in scrubs for work. I am now into a size 16 jean, size xl top and size large scrub! I cannot believe it.

My work return was not as great as I thought. Alot of other nurses were jealous at the attention I am getting (I guess because my ass has shrunk so much) and 2 days after I returned, I lost a dear patient. I am now over that, and can't believe it took me so long, but I have always been a sap!

I have decided to sit down the next few days I am off and make some goals for the New Year. I am hoping to hit onederland by the end of March 2007! I hope to hit my goal weight of 170 by November (truely hoping for septmeber) of 07 as well, although I promised myself I will not rush anything!

All of us are doing great. My hubby has not had any problems for 2 years now since his heart surgery. My son is loving th enew me and the newfound energy! We hiked Eaton Canyon today and it was so great to be able to do that again with him. Hubby and son are even losing weight.

Well...sorry for the long post.

Wish everyone the best for the New Year!

2 weeks post-op
on December 8, 2006 8:49 am
Hi everyone. I went fo rmy 2 week post-op appointment with my surgeon and it looks like everything is going like it should. I feel so much better. Pain is gone, incisions are totally healed and scabbed over and I have more energy. Best part...I can eat mushies now!!!! That in itself was wonderful. I have to admit O was terried of the first few bites of food, in fear I would get stuck (even though it was all soft). But let me tell you...mashed potatoes, cottage cheese and mac n cheese have never tasted so good!

I am now down 41 pounds since I met with my doc on Sept 1 of this year and feel like this tool is just what I needed. The hunger is fairly well controlled. I have been walking as often as I can and I look forward to heading back to work this coming Thursday.

Will update soon.

My Story

I am 39 years old (turning 40 1 day before my banding) and have struggled with my weight for many years. Not unitl I had my son (8 years ago) did I ever have a really hard time losing. It just seems darn near impossible right now. I am tall and hide weight well, but when I topped teh scale at 277 (my doctors scale said 282) I realized I needed to get going and lose weight.

I am a nurse who works with cardiac patients so when I tell them they must eat better, lose weight and the other stuff, I always feel like a hypocrit because I am obese! I felt by me losing weight, I will not only be healthier and happier myself, but can share my experience with my patients...the same ones who struggle like me to lose weight ( I have already gone through major heart surgery with my hubby last year)

I have completed all of my pre-op appointments and look forward to my banding in a few weeks. I am nervous, but I know this community will help me feel better by being a resource and vast amount of knowledge and experience, so I have no excuse but to lose.

11/2/06: 20 more days until I am banded. Have lost 20 pounds so far and need to get to 170!

11/8/06: Awaiting call back from doctor to verify I am cleared. Getting excited!!! Down 23 pounds now.
