Surgeon Testimonial

Alan Posner, M.D., F.A.C.S.
So far so good... I like his style, his straight-forwardness, no pussy-footing around... tells the risks out right, and you follow his program or you leave. I really like the fact that he listened to my questions and answered them in a way I understood without talking down to me; and he asked me if I had any more questions for him... WOW!

Dr Posner in Buffalo at Buffalo General Hospital is about the best thing that has ever happened to me! Had my WLS on Tuesday May 8th and was released on Thursday......all the staff who looked after me were the best!!!!! And I mean everyone, from the housekeeping lady who came in to empty the garbage pail to the Drs...eveyone asked me if I was ok, did I need anything, would I like to see a nurse...etc etc.

I'm impressed. Very impressed with the "perfect" WLS surgery I had in Dr Posner's hands to the followup he did during rounds to the greatest nursing team ever!

Oh, and canucks. If you're doing your "due diligence" and searching for a Dr for the WLS, then please do consider Dr Posner. OHIP works with them, and they're the ones I chose and I'm so ever happy that I did!

Thanks once again Dr Posner! Your skilll has given me back my life! WooHoo... I'm on my way!

MY FOOT and HAND ARE BLACK AND BLUE AND VERY SORE - I AM GOING TO SEE MY DOC TODAY - HE IS WORKING IN THE CLINIC.

Sooo... after 3 hours at the clininc (and yes, my doc was there and I got to see him)... I am fine, just  very badly bruised... he was quite surprised that the x-rays were negative for fractures... so... he gave me liquid vicodin, a tensor wrap and says will push for the MRI to be sooner rather then later due to this... so... still in limbo here!!  I am a hurting unit... OUCHIE!!!!

On a good note - down one more pound - has the plateau been broken??????  woo hoo!

SO... RE NOT BEING ABLE TO EAT CERTAIN FOODS WITH THE RNY:

THE "FORBIDDEN" FOODS: For ME: Yes to tomatos (diced small and chewed well); salsa (mixed with sour cream or cottage cheese), and a fry here and there -- but NO, NO, NO to KFC, burgers, mac & cheese, white pasta, lasagne, hot dogs (yes, I have tried these all and I was SO ILL!)  - even ONE chicken wing made me puke!

Try if you like - but don't be surprised at a negative reaction - I did and now I have no issues in staying away from them!!

And now my little podium speech (that I need to remind myself of too)...

Remember how the surgery works. You can't eat like everyone else. Remember your reasons for having the operation in the first place! Accept that the operation will restrict the type and amount of food that you might be used to eating. Remember that it is possible to stretch your stomach more rapidly than you would wish and you will end up not losing weight. This could happen when you eat larger quantities than the amount of food that fits comfortably into your new small stomach. Focus on the goal of a healthy body and a new outward appearance.

My right foot tingles/falls asleep all on its own - no matter what I may be doing (even while walking or jumping playing volleyball!!).  My surgeon and family doc are both suggesting things.  It is not a blood clot (first thing they ruled out)... I have had back x-rays and am scheduled for an MRI as they are thinking I have a compressed vertebrae or disc that is sending wrong messages down this one leg... it really is quite annoying and worrisome while I am in an active mode or wearing high heels!  They think it may be related to a car accident I had 9 years ago... but my tailbone was insulated with fat and now its not so I am feeling it now -- this has just been happening since WLS BTW.

Ok, so I responded to a msg board post with the abvoe - and then lo and behold later this day (and about 1.5 hous ago)...

I was going into the garage to help my kids put the papers together and I fell down the two concrete steps because just then my freaking foot decided to go numb!!  CRAP!  I now have a bump on my foot that is rapidly growing (have ice on it), but I can put weight on it so I do not think it is broken, I hit my back so that will hurt tomorrow, and messed up my left hand pretty good - although again I can move my fingers so I do not think I broke anything!  ARGH!

This really hurts now - man, I hope I did not break anything!!!

We lost a friend on the Ontario board today - Lucie L... she died from wound infection complications - something that can happen with ANY surgery, it is not specifically related to WLS.

All of you pre-ops who are scared and anxious in light of recent events to our friends here on OH... whatever your choice we are here for you.  And this IS the reason for us to be here... to help tell our stories, encourage people to research and educate themselves so that each and every one can make the best informed decision for ourselves.  WLS is NOT for everyone... if you choose to not go this route that is fine, if you choose to persue it further, do more research or whatever, that is fine too.

The fact of the matter is, this IS dangerous/serious surgery , and each one of us rolls the dice in undergoing it.  I feel that if we ignore the "what ifs" then we are not being true to ourselves and those who love us.  There are many things - before surgery, during surgery and after surgery - that are such unknowns, and in choosing surgery we need to prepare for the fact that the worst may happen.

So if you are scared - that is perfectly normal... and so you should be... but please do think long and hard and base your decision on YOU and just YOU!

And for all... PLEASE do not think of yourself as an "alarmist" or anything like that - IF you are unsure, get HELP right away - BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY - ANY medical personnel will agree with this!!!!

I had my gall bladder out Sept 21 last year, 4 dyas later I had unbearable pain and wound up in emerge... they sent me home thinking it was constipation - so stool softeners and T3 were administered; I went back to emerge again the next day - still in pain - this time they drugged me with narcotics, gave me an enema and sent me home... well, next day I went back AGAIN in even MORE pain and I told them I was NOT leaving until I saw my surgeon and this got sorted out... he sent me for a CT scan - it was clear BUT I was in pain so he admitted me... re-did the CT scan the next day and lo and behold there was a nick in my liver and a bile leak that fianlly showed up - I was septic and required emergency surgery to fix the bile duct and clean me out... I also required an ERCP and several endoscopies... I was in hospital 13 days and off work for 6 weeks.   I KNEW something was wrong - PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOOK YOUR HUNCHES... YOU KNOW YOURSELF THE BEST!!!!  Again, better safe then sorry!!!!
