Surgeon Testimonial

Thomas Sonnanstine M.D.
I was very excited to meet Dr. Sonnastine. I first heard about him when he came to town and started practicing at St. Luke. He was very informative. Answered all my questions. He explained the risks and he also reassured me how he will be with me, several times a day over the course of my hospital stay. I also feel very confident he is going to take great care of me. He assured me he would honor my dignity during surgery. That is something that is very important to me. I was not referred to him I chose him based on the information I researched about him. I know I have made the right choice. I am now 11mths out. My surgery was 10/17/05. Dr. Sonnanstine has been wonderful. I started at 296 and today I weigh 163. The post op group sessions are monthly and very informative. I have had no complications and I have gotten answers to any questions right away. Since having my surgery my niece has used Dr. Sonnanstine and my 2 sisters are in the process of approval. His bedside manner was unlike anyother doctors that I have known. On the day of my surgery I know I saw him 4-5 times. He was straight forward in educating me on the risk involved, which I did my homework and I knew. My only regret was I had not found Dr. Sonnanstine sooner.

I just saw Angela's post on the KY board, and I feel awful about the situation you guys are in. Remember, you have friends on the KY board, and there's a lot of us praying for you.

I am married to a wonderful husband and have 2 daughters, twins, that are 7 years old.  I have researched for 2 years and its time. My quality of life is terrible.  I am so tired of telling my girls I can't play outside or if I do I sit down to turn the jump rope because my back is killing me.

I have been over weight my entire life.  I can remember
1st grade buying school clothes.  Back then you had to wear skirts or dresses.  My mom took me to Penney's.  They only had 1 style dress in the little girls plus size.  It was plaid with a white color.  Needless to say that was the only thing I wore the whole year.  I had the dress in every plaid color they made. To this date I hate plaid.

10/12/12 WELL IT HAS BEEN 7 YEARS SINCE MY SURGERY.  I AM SO GREATFUL.  HAS IT BEEN EASY?  HELL NO.  I WANT TO SCREAM TO THE WORLD THIS WAS BY NO MEANS A CURE.  YOU HEAR THE PHRASE ALL THE TIME, "IT IS JUST A TOOL", AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS.  ALSO IF YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR TOOL IT STILL WORKS AFTER 7 WONDERFUL YEARS.  I AM SO SORRY FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT FEEL THE SURGERY FAILED BUT I HAVE TO SAY THAT EDUCATION BEFORE HAND, FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS, SEEING A PSYCHIATRIST AND HAVING SUPPORT MAKE THIS SURGERY A SUCCESS.  I THINK BEING BULLHEADED ALSO HELPS.  I HAD SO MANY PEOPLE NOT WANTING ME TO DO THIS BECAUSE THEY WERE SO LOVING AND THEY WANTED ONLY THE BEST FOR ME.  YES THE SURGERY IS VERY DANGEROUS BUT DYING WAS NOT AN OPTION AND THAT WAS WERE I WAS GOING TO BE IF I DIDN'T DO THIS.

THROUGH THIS JOURNEY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE I AM SO GREATFUL FOR MY LOVING, BEAUTIFUL 2 SISTERS WHO ALSO HAD THE SURGERY BUT WHO WERE MY BIGGEST CHEERLEADERS EVER.  MY HUSBAND AND MY GIRLS WERE TERRIFIC.  I WENT TO WORK TODAY AND TOOK A PICTURE AND SHARED THAT TODAY WAS MY ANIVERSARY.  ALMOST EVERYONE SAID, "I DON'T EVER REMEMBER YOU BEING THAT BIG".  THAT STATEMENT BRINGS ME TO THE SAYING I HAVE ALWAYS SAID.
AT 311 POUNDS I WAS HUGE BUT I WAS INVISABLE.  I AM NO LONGER INVISABLE.  I AM ALIVE, ACTIVE, 52 YEARS OLD.  I AM HAPPY WITH MY WEIGHT, MY CLOTHES BUT MORE THAN ANYTHING, I LOVE MYSELF.
