on March 21, 2012 4:10 pm
Well is has been a while since I wrote anything.  I am currently at 230 lbs-I LOST MY 10%!!
I have an appt on 4/12 for my Psyc...I am told it all happens pretty quickly after that.

OMGOSH!!!

I must say I have been asking myself "can I do this on my own?"

"should I try?"

As most of you know, especially those of you who knew my brother

(see my profile page for his info) This is not an easy thing for

me....Losing him was so devistating to us all-espeically after his

Gastric Bypass.  But I follow his profile from ObesityHelp.com,

I use it

as inspiration to use this tool that Johnny so very believed in.

I know he is my Angel-I know he will hold me close...

So here's to it "ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING" along!

The LIVER...gotta love our Liver!!
on November 27, 2011 12:14 pm

I have been reading ALOT about the Liver.  My husband had a liver transplant in 2007, and while he is getting stronger, it is NOT an organ you want to mess with-AT ALL.  Being obese I wondered about the damage I have done to my liver.  WOW...EYE opening at the VERY least!!

The rows of liver cells form the walls of the spaces. As the blood flows through these spaces the liver cells remove the toxins, dead cells, micro-organisms and fat from the blood stream. Thus we call the liver the filter and cleanser of the blood stream. If the liver spaces and liver cells are full of fat, then the liver is not able to filter and cleanse the blood stream efficiently and the blood stream will become overloaded with toxins and fat

How do you know if you have a fatty liver?
  • You will probably be overweight, especially in the abdominal area
  • You will find it very hard to lose weight
  • You may have elevated cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood
  • You may have Syndrome X
  • You may have diabetes type 2
  • You will be very tired
  • You may have problems with your immune system

The consequences of a fatty liver

The healthy liver regulates fat metabolism and is the major fat-burning organ in the body.  Indeed the healthy liver not only burns fat, it can pump excessive fat out of your body through the bile into the gut. Thus, if your liver is healthy you will not have much difficulty in controlling your weight. Conversely a liver which is fatty is doing the opposite of what it should be doing. A fatty liver is storing fat when it should be burning fat and removing excess fat from your body. Indeed a fatty liver becomes a warehouse for fat and if it is allowed to progress for many years, the liver may finally become just a "bag of fat" with dire consequences for your health and longevity.

How common is fatty liver?

In the USA the incidence of fatty liver is 15 to 20% of the general population and is much higher than this in obese individuals. Fatty liver is the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests in the USA. It can also occur in children.

SOME HELPS:

·         Reduce the consumption of refined carbohydrates from sugar and bread, pastry, pasta, noodles, cakes, biscuits and desserts. ·         Increase the amount of raw fruits and vegetables ·         Use raw vegetable juices ·         Avoid deep fried, fatty, and processed foods ·         Aim to limit dairy foods including milk, processed cheese, cream and butter.  Opt for organic yogurt and cheese such as ricotta, parmesan or cottage. Try some different brands and varieties of soy as they vary greatly. The fresh soy products in the dairy cabinet are much lighter and not as strong in taste as the long life products. There are also rice milks and oat milks to try. ·         Avoid ALL margarines and similar type spreads.   ·         Avoid sugary processed foods and drinks ·         Limit chicken and turkey that is not free range as this contains artificial growth hormones, antibiotics and steroids that increase the liver's workload. ·         Drink 2 liters of water each day.

I am OVER THIS!!
on November 25, 2011 4:27 pm

So I love to cook, I do.  And my Thanksgiving dinners are TO DIE FOR...they are.  I usually do not sample everything-and I do not eat to much, so not such a bad holiday for me.  (it's the everyday things I crave, being Italian that would be pasta, sauce, etc)  What was a pain in the rump was climbing up and getting all the ingredients!!  OMGOSH!!  I wish I had a quarter for everytime I talked to myself and said "why are you so chubby? huh...huh...WHY?!"   I am SO over this!!  I want to be able to pick up something easy when it falls, climb on my little step ladder in the kitchen (did I mention I am 4 ft 11 in)  I want to stand in the kitchen and not have my feet swell and my back ache....I AM OVER THIS.

December 15 I meet with the Nutritionist and the Surgeon-I need to lose 25 lbs, I have lost 5 of them.  I am working very hard to have that gone by Dec 15th so that I can get a surgery date.

I mean being so short is already a disadvantage for the things in the cupboard, on the fridge.....but also being thick and chubby-OBESE.....
Some days I am so mad at myself.  But then I remember that along this journey we are who we are because of what we do, how we live.  While I have  had some hard life lessons, some significant losses, I have also loved much, laughed alot so I would NOT change anything.  I learn, I adapt and I move on.  So I put on my big girl panties (lol!) and forge ahead.

It was a good dinner....

FOR JOHNNY-I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH....
on November 19, 2011 3:03 pm

As most of you will see in my postings, my brother John was a VERY active member of Obesity Help.  They even did a center fold on John in an Obesity Help Magazine shortly after his passing (this is sort of ironic as John would have LOVED being a centerfold!!)
I found this picture trail made by a good friend of John's, Carolyn.

I want to share it with everyone....as I prepare for my own surgery I remember John's Journey-his determination, his ambition to use this tool as best as he could.  I use his profile as my guide:

I miss you Johnny-but I know you are there-walking this walk with me, guiding me as you promised in your last post to us all:
"For my brothers and sisters still struggling, keep the faith. This disease does not have to be fatal. I am looking over you all from my place in Heaven and if God allows me to do so, I will lend you the strength you need to persevere."

Love,
Your Big Sister...Terri.

MY POST TO ALL BOARDS IN REFERENCE TO JOHNNY'S PASSING;
My name is Terri Ott. I am John's older sister. I would like to explain what happened to John. John did have the filter, and it did the job. It caught a HUGE blood clot. He was doing well the day of surgery, I helped him walk for the first time at 5 pm that afternoon (surgery was done at 10 am) There was another man who had surgery the same day, same time, and John asked me to let him see "Kurt". We walked to see him, and then back to John's room. Although he was tired, he was doing good. The next morning when I saw him, he was VERY stressed, he had walked again, but he had a large pain while he was walking, so they brought him back to his room with a chair. He was sweating, and breathing heavy, so the nurses were concerned. That was 11 am, by 2:00 pm he was in ICU, his blood pressure had dropped, they could not get it above 50, when I got to him, he had 19 bags of different fluids being put into him to help raise the blood pressure. He was not awake, he was very sedated. John's doc was the Chief of Staff at Scripts Mercy Hospital, for Pacific Bariactric, and had been the Chief of Staff for 10 years. At this point the doc had hand picked the specialists for John. They opened him up again, to make sure he was not bleeding, as they had started putting him back on blood thinners. The surgery was fine, so he went to xray, where they saw the blood clot in the filter. The good news was the filter worked. The bad news was they could not figure what was going on. They put a cathater in John's heart, it was very weak, but they were unable to see if he had a heart attack. It was very difficult to get blood from John, but they finally did, and were going to test the blood gasses. His kidneys then failed, due to the low blood pressure. On Thurs morning, the nurse let me see John at 6 am. She said he was slightly sedated, and was communicating with them (they asked him to move his toes, which he did) I held his hand, asked him if he knew I was there, he squezzed my hand. I told him to fight, to fight like he never has, he squeezed my hand HARD, and tears came out of his closed eyes. I told him that I loved him and would love him the rest of my life. He squeezed my hand again. I told him about all of you and your prayers, he cried again. After that they needed to sedate him again, I was SO glad to have seen glimpses of my brother, I just did not know we were saying goodbye. John kept getting worse, his nurses have been by his side for over 12 hours, no breaks, no lunches. Finally the blood tests were returned, John had a heart attack, and his heart was too small to help him fight anymore. He had been on a ventalter from the beginning, to assist his lungs, ease the stress for the body. His Doctor was wonderful, he felt so bad, but had to tell us that it was time to decide how long we wanted them to work on him. He coded already, and it was just a matter of time. I asked the doc if John would live, no matter what they did, he said no. They asked all us girls what we wanted, I told them to stop beating on my precious brother. Let us hold him, let us help him thru his last journey. They let all of us, and there were at least 15 of us holding John, singing to John, praying with John until he passed, including the nurses, and the doctors. Everyone was crying, even the docs/nurses. My husband said the heart monitor responded to us, so we do believe that he heard us.
Please know that John passed due to his extreme health problems. Our family already had heart disease, so we were lucky to have had him for 44 years.
Again, thank you all for your love, it was everything to him, and now it is everything to us.
