Surgeon Testimonial

Ralph Crum, M.D.
Dr. Crum is very skilled in bariatric surgery, and continues his care post-op with mandatory support group meetings, and other aftercare services. He is more strict in many aspects than other surgeons, but patient safety is his #1 concern. I find it a plus that Dr. Crum is one of the only surgeons in the country that is skilled as a bariatric surgeon and a trauma surgeon. He is probably overqualified for Amarillo, and I feel lucky to have such a great surgeon in my hometown.

My weight loss journey
on May 9, 2007 5:48 pm
January 21,  2007.  First visit with the surgeon.  198lbs.  I have a list of specialists that I need to visit for my pre-op consultations.  I have to see a nutritionist, a psychiatrist, a cardiologist and a pulmonologist.

March 30, 2007.  190lbs.  Surgery today.  I hope to be able to come home afterwards.  Surgery is scheduled for 12noon.  The good news is that my gallbladder is coming out today!  That thing has bothered me for years.

March 31, 2007.  Ouch!  I'm being a big whiney baby.  I had my gallbladder out, and what Dr. Crum called a "huge" hiatal hernia repaired, and my band placed.  I'm pretty sore, spent the night at the hospital.  My DH is a gem, he's a nervous wreck taking care of me.  He had to call the Dr. cuz the pain meds weren't working, the pharmacy had mixed it too weak, Meaghan said to increase the dose from 1 tsp to 1 tablespoon (or up to 2).  Now I feel dizzy, and nauseated when my eyes are open.  So, I spend most of my time in bed.

My Story

I am 48 years old, married to the most amazing man for 20 & 1/2 years, with two teenage sons.  I was born and raised in the panhandle of Texas, and have been a RN for almost 26 years.  I have been overweight at least since my kids were born, and despite countless attempts to lose weight with any and all weight loss "gimmick", I have actually gradually put on weight.  I am 5'2", and at my heaviest (in January '07) I weighed 198.  I have researched the various weight loss surgeries, and have decied to have the lap-band.  My first serious attempt was last summer, but was denied by my insurance company because I wasn't heavy enough.  Ha!  I was close enough, nothing that pizza for dinner for a week couldn't fix.  (just joking).  Well, since then, I have developed several "co-morbidities", so I have decided to have the surgery, whether or not the insurance will pay.  To my surprise and delight, they are agreeing to pay.  I will have the surgery on Friday, March 30th!  I cannot wait to have the surgery and begin this new healthy life.
